Liza had started to stir in her sleep by 5 am, but Eva was already awake staring through the dark into Liza’s face. As light started to creep into the room, Eva tried to analyse each freckle or blemish on Liza’s face hoping that she would receive some type of answer. The sad thing for Eva was that the only thing running through her head was her questioning what Liza had that Eva didn’t. Why was Liza the one Gerard liked and she wasn’t? More importantly, why was Liza texting Gerard when before he came to the school she knew about Eva’s complete infatuation. She also couldn’t understand just how nasty Liza had been through text messages calling her “annoying” to her rock star crush.
Liza’s eyes started to wake and her mouth was beginning to steady into a yawn. Eva promptly adjusted her facial expression to a more appropriate facade.
“How long until the bus comes?” asked a yawning Liza.
“It comes as 7. It’s 5 now. Let’s go make breakfast,” said Eva hiding any form of emotion she had experienced the night before.
Both girls got up wrapping themselves in woolly nightgowns and slippers and stepped into the kitchen to make pancakes. Eva did not bring up Gerard or any mention of the texts she saw the night before. Eva needed to learn to control her emotions, but also learn who her friends were. The morning was solemn for both girls, but Liza did not notice any anger on Eva’s face just thinking that Eva was tired. Eva noted that Liza was checking her phone regularly on the way to school and a bit of jealousy had crept up.
“Thanks for last night,” said Liza. “I have to go do something. I’ll see you in the art rooms at lunch?”
“Yeah, sure,” said Eva, and both girls walked in different directions.
Eva headed off to roll call early; waiting outside the room before the bell had rang. When the bell finally had rang her year adviser approached her hurriedly.
“Eva, I have been trying to find you all morning. I need you to go around to every class room in the school during first period and inform them of the up and coming year 12 fundraiser where we are having a cake stall tomorrow,” he said breathlessly handing her a sheet with all the details to say. Nick had just approached the room and he was pulled up as well.
“Go with Eva during first period, she will explain,” said their year adviser as he was quickly ushered off by another teacher to discuss personal matters.
“What is this for?” asked Nick. “Why did he pick me for? I don’t even get involved in school activities.”
“Beats me,” said Eva. “As long as we miss out on first period.”
When roll call had ended, Nick reluctantly stood by Eva and waited five minutes till all the people had moved to their classes. It was no longer awkward for Eva standing near Nick because she had her heart set on Gerard Way, and now that he had entered her real life, Nick was just another person.
When they finnaly went around to the classrooms, Nick made Eva do all the talking, just standing there to make it look like he supported the cause, making the girls in every year more likely to listen. They had knocked on almost every door, Eva purposely leaving the social science block till last to avoid having to see Mr. Way. She was angry, sad and anxious about Liza and his relationship or whatever it was. She didn’t know for sure what was happening- after all, what can one tell from a few text messages?
When the time finally came to see Mr. Way's class Eva took a deep breath which Nick heard.
“Oh for Christ sake, calm down,” said Nick agitatedly. “What is it with you and that looser?”
“Can’t I merely breathe in and out?” said Eva subtly. “Stop assuming.”
Nick rolled his eyes and Eva’s thin fingers clenched together to knock on the tattered green door. She walked in to a class full of seniors only in the year below hers. They all switched their gazes to Eva and Nick. Mr. Way had adjusted his gaze and stopped mid sentence when he saw Eva.
“Eva, can I help you?” said Mr. Way politely. Eva smiled.
“Is it Ok if we talk to your class for a moment?” she asked assertively. Although she really adored him, a little bit of him made her a bit sick inside.
Mr. Way put the chalk in his hand down, folded his arms and sat on the nearest desk signifying for her to proceed. Eva simply looked at him not smiling anymore and bluntly told everyone about the cake stall tomorrow taking place near the English rooms. Once she had finished she turned to walk away not looking at Mr. Way before leaving and saying a small ‘thank you’ directed to everyone in the class. Although Eva didn’t see it, Mr. Ways expression seemed confused and a little disappointed as if he could tell she was hesitant towards him.
When Nick and Eva proceeded to head out Nick noticed Eva’s reaction but decided not to mention anything. He couldn’t act like he cared in front of her, so he simply said “You are the most confusing person I know.” Eva just stuck her finger up at him and he smiled behind her back.

By lunch Eva had debated a million reasons not to go to the art room to see Liza but eventually decided that she needed to grow up and accept what may happen. As she walked unhurriedly to the art rooms she took several breaths to soothe her anxious heart and entered the room. As she turned her head it wasn’t surprising to see Mr. Way and Liza sitting by each other entranced in a lino print together. As Eva entered they both shot their heads up and she received a smile from both of them, each one meaning a different thing from the other. Eva debated whether to go, but decided to walk over to the table and pull up a chair and join them.
“Hey,” she said softly to both of them.
“Hey,” they both said at the same time. Mr. Ways gaze was boring into her but she kept her eyes firmly pointed towards Liza’s lino print.
“I was just helping Liza with the finishing touches on her lino print,” said Mr. Way trying very hard to justify his closeness with Liza, but also start conversation.
“It looks really good,” said Eva still keeping her eyes planted to the artwork. “I think I’m going to go to the canteen. Do you guys want anything?” Eva had to get out of the room for a few minutes to compose herself. Mr. Way simply shook his head to signify a no.
“Get me an iced coffee,” said Liza. Eva always bought Liza things mainly because Liza never had any money because both her parents were on welfare payments. It never bothered Eva though, always happy to share whatever she had- even her crushes it seemed now.
Eva took her time getting to the canteen and coming back. She had bought three iced coffees, the European in her blood coming out in her actions. Her mother had always taught her to buy for everyone even if they didn’t want anything just because it was polite.
By the time she had returned however a scene met her eyes that she wasn’t particularly fond of. Liza’s chubby face was so close to Mr. Way’s gorgeous face, and Mr. Way was looking intently into Liza’s eyes as if there was some chemistry between the two of them. Once they saw Eva in the doorway it looked as if both Liza and Mr. Way had blinked and quickly faced her looking utterly shocked.
“I’m sorry,” said Eva walking up to them and placing their bottled ice coffees on their desk and quickly picking up her bag. “Umm, I have to go and talk to Mr. Fried about my English major work, I forgot.” Said Eva hurriedly and politely masking any form of sadness on her face. She swiftly turned, the other two not having said anything and began to walk out.
“Eva,” began Mr. Way. Eva quickly squeezed her eyes before turning around and smiling.
“Yeah,” she said happily.
“We were just having a staring competiton,” he said innocently and very honestly.
“Oh, I didn’t think anything anyway,” said Eva praying to God to stop her from doing anything irrational and screaming “LIES, LIES, LIES” to his face.
“See you,” said Eva before turning around again.
“Eva,” said Mr. Way. Eva almost turned around and screamed but held it in.
“Thanks for the coffee, even though I didn’t want one,” said Mr. Way nervously trying to look into her eyes.
“No problem, I just thought I would be polite,” said Eva turning away again.
