Chapter 16
Eva’s tears had dried all over her pillow case by morning. She had spent most of the night crying and thanked God the weekend had come. After a long sleep in, she finally awoke feeling as if she was hung over. He head ached, her bones were sore and her eyes swollen. She couldn’t believe how such a wonderful night had ended so terribly. It was expected though. They were both stepping into risky territory and they were both confused. Mr. Way- as she had started calling him again, had just found out two years of his life had been a lie, and Eva had suffered rocky territory for many years as well.
It felt like a knife to the heart when she saw all the desert dishes left in the lounge room. She couldn’t be bothered to pick them up the night before, so this morning meant she had to tidy up the rubbish of last night. She sighed when she saw the DVD he brought up still in her house. It was a rental and it was due today. She felt anxious wondering what to do with it. She thought about the kiss last night. It wasn’t even a kiss, more like a brush of the lips, but it was that brush of the lips that made the night wonderful and at the same time end terribly.
She cleaned the house and had a shower before getting ready to go and return his DVD. The weather was cold, but Eva waited for the bus- only just a few more weeks till she would be able to drive by herself, and paid her fare once on. She got off at the mall and walked until she reached the video store where Mr. Way had gotten the DVD. She plopped it in the return slit and walked back to the mall where she stacked up on a few needed groceries.
After about an hour she had arrived home again, and her mood had not changed. Her eyes were heavy but she forced herself to do the stupid assignment Mr. Way had set her. After about three hours, Eva had finished and relented to sleep taking a hold of her.
She could feel nothing while she slept, the pain turning into warmth.
Tap. Tap. Tap.
She was awoken. She realised that there was someone at the door, and abruptly got up. She hated answering the door when her parents weren’t there but her mood was so down she didn’t care if the person at the door was an axe murderer. “Even better!” she thought.
She walked from her room to the front door and swung it open. Her eyes were grave, and she looked like she hadn’t slept in a week, but she didn’t care, until she noticed who it was.
“Hi,” said Mr. Way at the door. Eva wanted to excuse herself and flush her head down the toilet. She had this pathetic dignity where she always promised herself that she never wanted a man to see they had hurt her, but this man always caught her off guard. Eva did not say anything but just glared at him. She did not invite him in, nor initiate any conversation.
“I left my DVD here the other day, and I need to return it back to the video store,” he said. He stared at Eva hopefully, his voice kind and polite. Eva looked as if she would throw daggers at him.
She did not say anything.
“So can I get it?” he asked.
“What?” said Eva darkly? “Oh, I already returned it.”
“Oh,” he said. “Thanks.”
“Ok, bye.” Said Eva bluntly and indifferently to him swinging the door closed in his face. She waited for the bang of the door as she walked away but it did not come.
Eva turned.
The door had stopped in its tracks and Mr. Way was standing there in her doorway looking serious.
“Get out of my doorway, please, Mr. Way,” said Eva directly.
Mr. Way ran towards her, swinging the door shut in the process hearing the bang. He slowed down slightly when he came towards her and grabbed her face forcefully and planted his honeyed lips onto hers. Eva was taken by surprise, wanting to push him away for him being so horrible to her, but also wanting to stay in the feeling she was experiencing.
He encouraged her lips to overlap with his, and the energy was so intense he lifted Eva till her legs wrapped around his waist. He walked carrying Eva and still kissing her innocent and inexperienced lips and briefly stopped kissing so he could look into her eyes. He had walked over to the couch and he put her down gently, Eva’s legs unwrapping from him, but looking intensely into his eyes prompting more but at the same time wondering why. He sat down next to her and moved his head towards hers again. He planted his lips on her once more, this time making harder movements and gently laying her down. She could feel the presence of his firm body on top of hers, but only lightly as if trying not to squash her.
He was respectful, only touching her lips with his and not moving his hands elsewhere. Eva was getting used to the idea of kissing, getting more passionate by the second. She could feel a different sort of anxious feeling, one where her heart and stomach reacted so much they sent a flaming sensation all through her body.
She noticed how into it he was getting, as if her lips were giving him life, and it made her feel all the more special. She wanted to touch his body, but she knew how inexperienced she was, so she felt scared. She wanted to move her hands towards his stomach, but they were trembling. She took a bit of power off her kissing, making Mr. Way stop slightly and rub his nose on hers slightly before touching her lips again.
Her trembling hands moved to where his shirt was and she moved her wavering fingers underneath his shirt, wanting to feel what was underneath. She continued kissing and Mr. Way could feel what she was trying to do, but did not want to ruin her exploration or confidence. Eventually, her slightly cold fingers touched his smooth and definite stomach, and she could feel the slight chill he felt in their kiss.
She got more confident and moved her fingers further up his stomach, getting harder in her kiss. She found this strength she couldn’t define and with unspoken words she and he slowly switched positions so she could be on top. He looked adoringly into her eyes in that brief moment that they weren’t kissing and were switching positions and she planted her lips on his again once they had switched. Her hands moved up his shirt again and her fingers caressed him wanting to feel the area where his heart was. She could feel him tensing up, and he stopped kissing.
She looked down on him, and he wanted to grab her right there and then but he held himself back. She was the most beautiful being he had seen, and he couldn’t define the feelings he had felt, but it was almost as if they had met in each other’s dreams before. Even though she was the most beautiful thing on the planet there was also something tainted about her, as if she had a knowledge no one else knew that affected her deeply. It was these things that drew him to her even more.
“Did I do something wrong?” she whispered worriedly.
“You can never do anything wrong,” he said quietly staring into her deep eyes.
He pushed her down onto his body and then moved her to lean on his arm. He wanted to hold her there, wondering what it would feel like just to have someone like her cover his heart with her body.
They lie there in each other’s arms, unspoken words between them, and they dreamt about what happened and what could happen. He realised what a large responsibility he had with her, and it scared him, but he did not break away like last night, rather he held onto her tighter.
“I’m so sorry,” he said.
“I am sorry,” said Eva.
“You have to stop apologising to me, because every time you do it makes me feel guilty because I should be the one apologising,” he said anxiously.
“Why do you have any reason to apologise?” she asked.
“I’m a wreck.” He said. “I want you, yet I can’t have you.”
“Yes you can,” said Eva.
“But it’s so wrong,” he said.
Eva pushed herself off him looking into his eyes angrily.
“Stop saying that all the time, for once let me live in fantasy rather than in reality,” she said. “If you don’t want me then go. I’m sick of these games we play.”
He looked up into her magnificent and picturesque beauty that she had no idea about. The moment he saw her was as if she was a perfect stranger that was out of bounds.
“I can’t explain it,” he said. “I find it so hard to explain.” He was tortured inside, and he couldn’t explain anything when it came to her. “Just know that I want you,” he said.
Eva looked at him and put her head down again resting it on the position of his heart. He put his hand over her head and played with her hair. There was silence.
“I can hear you heart,” said Eva expressionless after a little while.
“What do you hear,” he asked sceptically.
“It beats, but each beat is characterised,” she began. “I can hear the pain, and how the strength has almost disappeared, but it is holding on. I’ll play the pattern.” She played the rhythm of his heart by tapping her fingers of his chest lightly.
Her words haunted Gerard. It was things like this that made him wonder about the knowledge Eva held. It sent him shivers because it was if she could tell what his heart held.
“If you don’t mind me asking, “said Eva nervously but strongly “What’s keeping it going?”
“You,” he said.
“Lies,” Eva said. She couldn’t believe a person would ever feel that way about her.
“I swear,” he said desperately wanting her to understand just how she made him feel.
Eva lifted her head from his chest and crept up to his face. She looked into his heart shaped head and traced her fingers down his nose and onto his lips. She lowered her face down and kissed his lips gently lifting her face up again while he looked into her eyes.
“I’m sorry If I was a bad kisser,” she said embarrassedly but smiling slightly.
He lifted her with his amazing strength and swung her around so he was on top of her. He kissed her lips fervently before looking down on her and speaking.
“When will you learn about apologising?” he said. “I enjoyed your lips.”
Eva smiled embarrassedly and then let out a cackle of a laugh which not only ruined the perfect mood, but sent Gerard in a fit of laughter.
“Your laugh is hysterical,” he said laughing. “Why are you laughing?”
“Cause you’re so cute and that was so lame!” said Eva tears in her eyes. “I enjoyed your lips.” Said Eva imitating him.
“Well, it was true!” said Gerard. “I don’t sound like that!”
“I’m sorry,” said Eva still smiling. He attacked her lips again.
“Stop apologising!” he said.
“I’m...” she began but was stopped by his lips again.
After a few seconds of kissing again, Gerard got up and excused himself for having to leave to the protest of Eva. He did not kiss her when he left, the look of want and guilt back in his eyes again. Eva promised herself for what it was worth, if he never spoke to her again, she would always remember the slight moment they shared.
Eva’s tears had dried all over her pillow case by morning. She had spent most of the night crying and thanked God the weekend had come.
