BABBETTE
Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into a month. A month full of outings, little adventures, sleep overs, laughter, love making, and kisses. Gerard was by far the sweetest, most amazing, most creative boyfriend I’d ever had. I’d grown closer with him and his friends. I’d found myself somehow in the middle of this very tightly knit little family. I felt so glad to finally have found my niche…

Gerard rolled over after we’d finished another beautiful love making session in the bright, morning light pouring into my bedroom. Still panting, I wrapped my arms around his neck. He turned to face me and I smiled.

“You are so gorgeous.” He breathed, making me blush. I kissed him on the each cheek and then on the lips. He pulled me closer, so that every inch of me was up against him.

“I love you…” I murmured, nestling my head on his bare chest. He mumbled the same into my hair and we laid like that for a quite a while. I felt so safe when I was with him. It was like nothing could ever hurt me, be it words or injury, when I was wrapped up in his arms. And of course his cell phone had to ring and ruin it all.

He sat up and pulled his phone out of his pants pocket on the floor.

“Hey Frankie. Well, kind of. I’m with Babes. What are you talking about? Are you drunk? Figures… Hey! So Mikey is with you? Fuck…” he said. I raised an eyebrow and sat up. “Whatever. Bye.” He grumbled before hanging up.

“What’s going on?” I asked as Gerard started getting dressed.

“Frank and Mikey are drunk. They need me to come pick them up.” Gerard said tiredly. Any other girlfriend would’ve complained and said something like, “Can’t they ask somebody else”, but I just sighed and got dressed. I knew that Gerard had a duty to his friends and that they would’ve done the same thing for him.

“Why are you getting dressed?” he asked, grabbing his keys off my dresser.

“I thought I’d come with you. Your going to need help.” I said. Gerard bit his lip in hesitation, but shrugged. We went out to his car and drove off.

“Did he tell you where they were?” I asked as we tried to get passed the traffic.

“Yeah. They’re at a local bar. It isn’t too far away.” he explained.

“What are we going to do with them when we get em?” I asked. Gerard pursed his lips at that one.

“I uh, I guess we’ll just take them back to Frank’s house. My mom won’t be too happy with Mikey drinking.” Gerard said. I would offer for them to stay at my apartment, but the truth was I was very curious to see what Frank’s house looked like. I had been to everybody else’s, but not his oddly enough.

It didn’t take long to reach the bar because I lived so close to the city. It was a seedy, untrustworthy place with peeling paint. The cigarette smoke was so thick you could hardly see inside. I couldn’t help but cough and let Gerard lead me inside. We found the drunken pair slouched over a booth ridden with beer cans and glass bottles.

“Hey man! You made it!” Mikey said, greeting us with a belch. His glasses were crooked and so was his smile.

“C’mon Mikey, we’re going home. Babes, can you get Frank?” Gerard said. He hoisted Mikey up and dragged him away. I noticed Frank slumped over in the back of the booth, completely out of it.

“Come on Frankie, you can do it.” I said, struggling to get him on his feet. He mumbled something and his head lolled to the side. I huffed and pulled him up by his arm. He wobbled and half-collapsed on me. Feeling slightly in secure and out of place I maneuvered Frank and myself out of the god-awful place and out to Gerard’s car.

“What took you so long?” Gerard asked, patting Mikey’s back as he threw up on a fire hydrant. I cringed.

“Frank can barely walk, none the less stand up.” I said, shoving his dead weight into the back seat and buckling him in. Gerard buckled Mikey in and we were ready to go.

We climbed back into the car and I looked back at the two as we drove to Frank’s house. I couldn’t help but laugh. They looked like toddlers, tuckered out after a long day of play. Their heads were rolled over and they were leaning against each other. Gerard glanced back and chuckled too. He reached over and took my hand, also grabbing my attention. I sat up and kissed him, but kept it quick because he had to drive.

“So this is what we call quality couple time.” Gerard joked. I smirked and leaned my head on his shoulder.

“Driving our passed out friends around town?” I chimed in. Gerard laughed out loud and I closed my eyes, trying to savor the moment.

It didn’t take long to get to Frank’s house. And with lots of elbow grease and negotiating we managed to wrestle the two into the bedroom on the first floor. We tossed them into the one bed and as we were about to leave, Gerard stopped.

“Wait. There is no way that we can let them get away with this. There’s no way you can just get rip roarin’ drunk and not be punished.” He said thoughtfully. We exchanged a malicious glance…

“There, that should do it.” I said. Gerard and I had placed Mikey and Frank in a very suggestive position, wrapped in each other’s arms. It would be quite a shock when they woke up.

“So what do we do now?” Gerard asked, laughing as we made our way out. I got in the passenger seat and he started the car. It was still pretty early. It was turning out to be a pretty foggy, cold morning.

“We could go to Waffle House and have a few smokes.” I shrugged; knowing Gerard would never turn down a smoke. We pulled up to a red light and Gerard leaned over starting kissing my neck.

“What are you doing?” I gasped. I should’ve known Gerard would’ve turned down a cigarette for the chance to bang.

“Or maybe we could go back to your place and pick up where we left off.” He purred into my ear. I shivered and let out a sigh before noticing the light had turned green again.

“The lights green!” I shouted, shoving his head away. There was a moment of confusion before he realized what was going on. We laughed heavily as we pulled the Waffle House parking lot.

We took our seats and picked up the laminated menus, which were of course serving breakfast. Gerard pulled out his lighter and pack of smokes and handed me one. I didn’t really smoke, but I would have one every now and then.

“Good morning, can I get you something to drink?” asked a waitress who sounded more like a frog. Gerard lit our cigs and said two coffees. I took a big drag and felt the nicotine and poison fill my lungs. I blew the smoke in Gerard’s face and he did the same with me. I leaned over the table and kissed him deeply.

“Are you ready to order?” asked the waitress in a very grumpy tone. We pulled apart, embarrassed and she slapped out coffee on the tabletop.

“Um, we’ll have just one order of blueberry pancakes.” Gerard said, looking at his hands. We both knew that if we ordered separately that we wouldn’t finish our food. It was better just to share. The waitress scribbled down our order and walked away.

We put cream and sugar in our coffee and smoked our cigarettes. Gerard proceeded to tip some ashes in his coffee, and then drink from it. I giggled and made a disgusted face. Not too long afterward, our waitress came back and threw our pancakes on the table.

“I wonder what she’s so pissed about.” I mumbled, taking a bite of the fluffy, blueberry covered breakfast food.

“I’d be pissed too if I was fifty and still working at Waffle House.” Gerard said through a mouthful. I laughed and almost choked on my bite. We munched happily on our food, taking the occasional drag from our cigs and sipping our coffee. We took turns shoving food in each other’s face, to the dismay of our waitress.

Once our plate was cleared and our cups were empty, Gerard paid the check and we left the Waffle House, hand in hand. Just as we were driving away, my phone began to ring.

“Hello?” I asked, wondering who would be calling me.

“Hey sis.” Said a quiet and familiar voice on the other end. I gasped in shock.

“Elodie, what’s going on?” I stammered. I began to panic; my little sister only called when something bad was going to happen.

“Not much. Just thought I’d call and talk to you for a while.” She muttered. She was lying. She never called unless something was wrong.

“Elodie, tell me the truth.” I said firmly. She sighed heavily.

“I’m pregnant, okay?” she admitted. My heart sank into my stomach and I was filled with a very overwhelming feeling of dread.

“Oh Elodie. How could you do this? How could you be so careless?” I asked, the sadness and disappointment showing very clearly in my voice.

“I’m sorry okay. It just sort of happened.” She grumbled.

“Does mom know?” I asked, a wave of worry falling over me.

“Yes, she just found out today.” she said gloomily.

“How far along are you?” I asked. Gerard glanced at me with one eyebrow raised, but I ignored him.

“Six months…” her voice trailed off.

“SIX MONTHS? How could she have just found out?!” I yelled into the phone.

“Sorry okay! I didn’t tell her because I was scared! I’ve started showing a lot and I had no choice but to tell her!” she said defensively.

“What did she say?” I asked, quieting myself as much as I could.

“She kicked me out…” Elodie said softly.

“WHAT? SHE KICKED YOU OUT? You’re her daughter! Where did she expect you to go?” I said, my tone rising again.

“Jeez! Stop yelling at me! I don’t know! Why don’t you ask her!” Elodie fired back. I took a deep breath; she was right, I shouldn’t be yelling at her.

“That’s exactly what I’m going to do. Where are you?” I asked.

“Outside your apartment.” She said. I felt relieved, but only slightly considering the horrid situation.

“Okay, we’ll be home in a few minutes. Stay where you are.” I commanded before hanging up.

“What’s going on?” Gerard asked, glancing over at me. I sighed as I punched my mother’s number into my phone.

“My little sister is pregnant and my mom the her out.” I said exasperatedly. Gerard bit his lip anxiously and I waited for mom to pick up her phone.

“Hello?” she asked when she picked up.

“Mom, its Babs. Why would you kick Elodie out? She’s only fifteen!” I exploded without so much as a “hello”.

“If she thinks she’s adult to have a child then she is adult enough to live on her own. I’ve made up my mind and I do not want to hear anything else about it.” she said sternly before hanging up on me. I put my phone away and we pulled up to my apartment complex. I dashed inside to see Elodie sitting on the ground, her back to the wall.

“Elodie!” I called as I hurried to her. She looked up and pushed some mousy brown hair out of her eyes. Gerard was behind me, staying a cautious few feet back. I helped her up and saw that she was definitely pregnant.

“Hey…” I said, pulling her into an awkward hug. We were never very close, but she knew she could always come to me.

“Can I just get inside now.” she grumbled, shoving me away and tapping her foot impatiently. “Who’s that?” she asked, throwing a suspicious glare at Gerard.

“That’s my boyfriend, Gerard.” I said as I unlocked the door. We all went inside and stood anxiously around my living room.

“I’m gonna go chill in the guest room.” Elodie said sourly before turning and walking away.

“She seems nice…” Gerard said carefully. I laughed; Elodie was far from nice.

“Nice try Gerard.” I chuckled.
