Chapter 4

Frank’s stomach vaulted when he saw Gerard, he was frozen with one foot still laid out in front of him prepared for the next step. Gerard looked stunning. His brilliant hazel eyes were especially green today, rimmed in black liner and shadow. His hair perfectly imperfect and tousled and shining, he even made the stupid school uniform look good. But then Frank’s focus switched— walking down the hallway with Gerard, his Gerard— was someone else. Gerard was holding hands with this someone else, a brilliant smile possessing his face. He was holding hands with a girl… He tried to yell at them and tell them to go away, but he had no voice and choked on his premature syllables, his throat tightening as he tried to hold the torment he was feeling within. A green beast began clawing from the inside at the walls of his stomach, puncturing a lung—he couldn’t breathe. Frank felt red-hot shame creep up on his cheeks, how could he have ever thought Gerard would be interested in him, a guy. Gerard was beautiful…of course he had a girlfriend…And then he was falling, back…down…down…, Gerard’s eyes taunting him and the girls smirk torturing, down… down…black.

Frank’s eyes shot open, veins crawling with adrenaline from the nightmare. His breathing was ragged and his heart was hammering at his ribs. He sighed a heavy sigh, slightly relieved, and fell back onto his pillow. Fuck, he thought, fuckfuckfuck. He turned his head to look at his alarm clock, 3 more hours until school.

---
It’s 5am and yet Gerard is smiling and out of bed, you’re so lame for getting so excited over a new friend… a voice in the back of his head says. He considers it for a moment and his smile falters, but then he thinks about how interested in his art Frank was and how friendly he’d been, and he smiled more brilliantly than ever.

Gerard took a step towards the door of his room and suddenly the floor was coming up fast to meet Gerard’s face as he tripped over an unknown object in the dark, motherfucker he thought as he landed with a solid thud, good thing no one was here to see that…not that they could because it’s dark, which was the problem in the first place… he chuckled quietly to himself as he stood up.

He walked past Mikey’s room to reach the bathroom and peaked in to see if he had heard, but Mikey was still sleeping…maybe it is too early, he thought, after all they didn’t have to leave for another hour… Nevertheless he headed for the bathroom to straighten some of the more unruly parts of his hair down.

“FUCKING FUCKER!” Gerard couldn’t help but shout as he managed to shut his hair iron on a good part of his hand, he went to run it under cool water cursing under his breath as he did at his clumsy tendencies.

He knew Mikey had to be awake after that little outburst, and just as he thought Mikey comes groggily stumbling in, “Whassamatter?” Mikey rubbed his eyes and looked from Gerard’s hand under the faucet to the still hot hair iron abandoned on the tile, and smirked, “You would G, you would.” and turned to walk back out to get ready himself.

---
Gerard checked his reflection one last time, his hair seemed the right amount of messy and he was unusually pleased with his eyeliner job, he actually smiled at the mirror.

“Mikey! Come onnn, we’re gonna be late!” Gerard whined at his brother, taking big gulps from his coffee mug despite the fact that his taste buds were screaming from the hot liquid.

Mikey was never one to rush to get to school, and neither was Gerard, but today was different…
“Since when do you even care?” Mikey snapped, he leant over to tie his black, worn in converse and almost fell over forwards from being so drowsy. “I can’t even successfully tie my shoes, and you’ve been up since 5am…” He shook his head and finished with his shoes, looking up to face Gerard.

Gerard’s eyes, widened, he hadn’t wanted Mikey to know how early he had woken up to get ready for school.
“Yeah, I heard you rummaging around, sounded like you nearly killed yourself.” Mikey had no idea why, but he could see the discomfort and embarrassment on his brother’s face, so he decided to drop the subject; he’d be nice this morning even if Gerard was rushing him to go to hell.

“I’m just going to go ahead and walk, okay?” Gerard said exasperatedly.
”Gerard are you serious?” Now it was Mikey’s eyes turn to widen, shocked at his brothers decision.
“Yeah…Well I’ll see you later at school okay?” Gerard tried to brush off his brother’s annoying shock, so what, he thought, is it really all that strange to want to go to school? Yes, the voice in his head answered. What did the voice know anyway? He frowned and headed out the door, the sky was grey but he didn’t care, he was just happy to be off and away from Mikey’s pestering.

Fifteen minutes into walking to school with another fifteen to go, abnormally large, cold, and fast raindrops were pounding Gerard; he put his hood up in vain, soaked through only a minute after.

Great Gerard thought, now he’d look like a drowned rat. He could feel his face dripping rain water and went to wipe at it stupidly with his also dripping wet hand, black came off and he realized his eyeliner was running all down his face. This day was just brilliant; he’d already displayed his unfathomable grace twice this morning, and now he was going to drown in this torrential downpour. Could this get any worse?

Gerard jumped nearly out of his skin at the sudden sound of a car horn and moved closer to the side of the road without glancing back.
“Gerard!” …Mikey? THANK HEAVENS, Gerard spun around and started toward the voice eager to get out of the rain, but stopped dead when he looked at who had called his name. It wasn’t Mikey it was…Frank.

Gerard’s heart struck at his ribs excitedly, but he paid it no attention and instead tried to speak. He simply stood there with his mouth hanging open, catching the drips of black rainwater from his face.

“Do you want a ride? Get in, you’re soaked!” Frank waved him over and opened the passenger door slightly for him. Gerard walked slowly to the car and climbed in, “ermph, thanks…it’s raining.” THIS IS NEW INFORMATION, Gerard thought to himself, mentally slapping himself in the face. Frank grinned and began to rummage around in the backseat, pulling out a black zip hoodie.

“You can change into this if you want, it’s not the uniform but it’s dry and that bitch Chemistry teacher can get over it if she has a problem with it.” He held it out to Gerard, thinking about how Gerard would have to take off his own sodden hoodie and shirt…and then decided it was best not to think about that as a warmth shot through him and his face reddened.

Gerard eyed the hoodie cautiously, he really didn’t like anyone seeing him with his shirt off, his pale, soft body exposed was a terrifying thought, but he was cold and that got the better of him. “Yeah, thanks…Frank” He realized this was the first time he had said Frank’s name aloud and he thought he saw Frank blush, but didn’t see why he would so he probably didn’t.

Gerard peeled off his black hoodie and dropped it to the floor of the car. Frank tried to act as if he wasn’t watching, but he couldn’t look away and hoped his face didn’t look as eager and excited as he felt. Next was Gerard’s white uniform shirt, he did this slowly and awkwardly, fumbling at the buttons a bit from his half-nervous, half-cold shaking hands. Frank couldn’t help but smile to himself at how cute Gerard was, even sopping wet with eyeliner in streaks down his face. Frank bit his lip as Gerard finally slipped the shirt off, he was so pale and beautiful and just, ugh. Gerard may have been slow to take off his shirt, but he slipped and zipped the hoodie on hastily, eager to be covered again.

Frank looked away and down and hid his flushed face behind his floppy fringe, embarrassed that he had so avidly been staring and hoping Gerard hadn’t noticed.

Gerard was still blushing as well, “It smells good,” he blurted out, “I mean uh, you know it’s warm and um, uh…thanks.” WHAT THE FUCK, he thought, why would he say that? It did smell good, but what kind of thing is that to say to someone, especially a new friend, that is a guy, that probably thinks he’s very weird now.

Frank smirked and said, “Thanks” and began to drive to school, and Gerard just wanted to crawl inside himself and die, he was so completely mortified.

They arrived to school in 5 minutes, though it seemed 5 years to Gerard. They walked to Chemistry together in silence, Frank smiling and Gerard oblivious to this, still horrified. Chemistry was spent in silence, except for the droning of Mrs. Strangled Pigeon, and Gerard rushed out of the room as soon as the bell rang.

Frank was a little hurt that Gerard hadn’t said anything to him, but was still pretty pleased that he got to see Gerard take his shirt off, so he headed to English in a relatively good mood.

Gerard spent the rest of the day reliving the embarrassing moments from this morning, and ended up earning a detention for being out of Dress Code, this day really couldn’t get any worse he thought to himself.

---
When Gerard arrived home after serving the detention—cleaning the horrid bathrooms—Mikey cornered him the moment he walked through the door, but Gerard brushed him off, grabbed a mug of coffee and ran up the stairs to his room where he blasted The Smashing Pumpkins and crashed on his bed, too exhausted to even try to drink his coffee, and he passed out for the night. The last thought that ran through his head was Frank and how he’d have to really play it cool tomorrow if he was going to be friends with him…
