"Damn, this turns out to be a shitty birthday."

July 30 2035. The 26th birthday of the individual named Moon Seel. Moon Seel works as a detective, but apparently even on her birthday, she seemingly can't catch a break.
She is considered to be the best detective in town, being able to solve her cases the fastest and having no unsolved ones left. Well, apart from one. The case of the "Lady of Ice". A criminal who never lets any information about herself come to public. It had already been tough to find out that this criminal is a woman. And here, Moon is once again. Another victim killed by Moon's arch nemesis.
How Moon can be sure that it is the "Lady of Ice"? The "Lady of Ice" is known for her gruesome murders. At first, there were no traces, no hints, no evidences, nothing. One day though, for some unknown reason she decided to always leave a snowflake made out of paper at the crime scene. And at the crime scene right in front of Moon, the exact same snowflake like at all those other crime scenes is decorating the victim's body. Moon is lucky that this victim wasn't killed as cruelly as most of the others. This one was cut several times and left to bleed out.

The detective sighed in relief. Of course, she felt bad for the dead person, but she shuddered at just the thought of having to see this person killed in the same cruel ways as, for example, the previous victim who is still missing some limbs.

"Well, looks like I won't have such a nice birthday party today after all. Looks like a lot of work for me today."

----------

Meanwhile, this so-called "Lady of Ice" is reading the newspaper. Usually, she doesn't like being called by this moniker. But she dislikes her actual name even more. Helen Haag. A young woman, a young criminal, the "Lady of Ice".

While she is reading the newspaper, something seems to be very amusing to her. A smile appears on her face. "Ugh, how disappointing. Nothing new about our dear detective friend. What a shame...", she yells, being disappointed in the newspaper and holding it as if it was the most disgusting thing she ever touched. Her smile disappears as fast as it appeard and instead she pouts in disappointment. Just in that moment, someone else enters the room - the living room - that Helen is in.

"You act as if you two are besties, but she doesn't even know who you are", the new person, a woman named Melina Glass, says. She leans against the wall next to the entrance of the room, while looking at Helen. Helen tries to tell what Melina is thinking about or what her face is saying, but Helen has no idea. She never was good at that kind of stuff. She looks at Melina. She has to look up to see Melina, she has to look very high. For being a few months younger than Helen, Melina is a whole bit taller. Helen's whole face lit up upon seeing the taller one.

"Well, I consider her a friend. You know, like online friends. She doesn't know my real name because I never revealed it, but I know hers because she was bold enough to make it public!", Helen says happily, smiling from ear to ear. Melina wishes that that smile was real for once.

"Oh, fuck you. I doubt that that's how it works.", another voice, a manly one, says. The person also enters the room the two women are in, and stands in the middle of it. This man is named Marc Decay. And even though he is a year younger than Helen, he also is quite a bit taller than her, but slightly shorter than Melina.

Helen look up at him and sighs, deciding to just ignore Marc's comment. She doesn't like to argue with these two - these people that she might almost call friends. Just thinking about calling them her friends makes Helen sad.

Melina notices that something is up with Helen. She always notices. "What is it, Helen? Something on your mind?", she asks, the voice betraying her by showing the worry that her face doesn't show.

Helen gets startled by Melina's question. She didn't think that the other would notice something. Though, she should have expected it. She's just not thinking clearly right now. "Eh, you know about this little celebration in a few days? I wanted to go there with the two of you, but I didn't couldn't call there yet.", she answered. While she used that as an excuse, it wasn't completely untrue either. She really to call there to get to be a part of the little celebration. That would be her chance to finally meet the detective and continue with the execution of her plans. This celebration is the key to the rest of the plans. It might be risky, but being a criminal is risky in general. Well, so is being a detective.

"So? What's the problem? Are you afraid of phone calls?", Marc asks amused. Helen could only look at him. While she isn't the biggest fan of phone calls, the is capable of doing them if necessary.

"I'm not scared. Are you?", she asks. To be honest, she actually was curious now. She has never seen Marc call someone over the phone. He avoids it as much as possible. So, yes. She was allowed to ask such a thing.

"What? Of course not!", he says exasperated. Helen smiled. That was her chance to get away from this annoying task and let someone else do it. Then she can at least focus on something more important. But she wouldn't do that without a little fun beforehand.

"Really, little doggie?", Helen asks teasingly. Marc looks flustered. Helen always enjoys teasing the others. "Stop calling me a dog!", Marc yells at her. He really was fed up with her. No wonder if he has to hear her say stuff like that almost every day.
"What kind of a dog would he be though?", Melina asks. Helen seems to be thinking about it for a moment, before shaking her head very fast. "Maybe a chihuahua, I don't know much about dogs. And you would most likely be an orange cat, Melina. But that doesn't matter right now. We got off topic.", Helen says. They all seem to realize that they did indeed get off topic.

"As I said, I'm not scared of phone calls.", Marc says, reminding them - well, more like reminding Melina, since Helen still remembered the topic somewhat - what they were talking about.
"If you're not scared, then go ahead and call.", Helen said, handing Marc his phone. No one knows where she even got it from. Must be one of her many party tricks, the others thought.

"What? Why? Can't you do it yourself?", he asked exasperated and nervous. Helen gives him an unimpressed look and says casually, but with a slightly annoyed undertone: "I'm currently busy with a lot of stuff. You know, the plans and whatever. Meaning that I don't have time to deal with everything by myself." "Another one of your overcomplicated plans? Really?"

Then, there's a moment of silence before Helen starts talking again. "Have you ever read Sherlock Holmes?", she asks. Her voice sounded unusually soft and sad. Even Marc couldn't help but worry a little now, though he brushed it off quickly. He didn't want to think about Helen's voice and feelings right now.

"I'm not much of a reader.", he answered, even though that wasn't the question. "There are also a lot of movies or TV shows that are based on the Sherlock Holmes books. If you're not a reader, than I recommend you to watch some of those."

Then, Helen just walked past him, meeting Melina on her way out who stops her. "Who are you going to play in your plan? Sherlock or Moriarty?", the slightly younger of them asked. Helen smiled. "Well, I'm not a detective, am I?", she said, almost whispering. Then she left without looking back again, the talk about the phone call already forgotten by her.

"I'll call. Let her get at least a little rest. We don't need her to pass out.", Melina suddenly says to Marc and takes out her phone to do the said phone call. Marc only shrugged, not caring much about that, and left the room.

----------

At the police station, Moon Seel is currently sitting at her desk and looking through all files from all victims that have fallen by the "Lady of Ice". Moon seems pretty tired and frustrated. No wonder if she can't find anything.

A police officer comes up to her. The police officer is young woman named Merisu Smith, she is only a few days older than the detective, but a bit shorter. She leans on Moon's desk, waiting for the slightly younger of them to notice her presence. When, after a few minutes, Moon still hasn't acknowledged her presence and was still too focused on the files, Merisu cleared her throat at which the younger finally looked up.

"Oh, Merisu! I didn't notice you there.", Moon says, a little too quick for her comfort. "I know.", Merisu answered. At this point, she isn't surprised by Moon's actions anymore. She knows how focused the detective is on this case - or, well, these cases. While she doesn't like how her friend is overworking herself, she fully understands it. After all, Moon is trying to save people. People who might become the next victim. And while Moon hasn't found out yet the motive of their criminal, she found a small connection between them. But that didn't matter in the moment. Merisu must have come to her because she wanted something, or maybe she knew something.

"Uhm... Sorry, is there something you wanted?", Moon asks, a little unsure of what could be. She has a bunch of possibilities running through her head, but none of them make much sense.
"You know about this little celebration in a few days? The one where my sister is going to be a part of a drama play?", Merisu answered. Of course, Moon knew. She knew about the play in which Merisu"s older sister, Elly, is going to be in. She also heard about the celebration in general already. But why was Merisu talking about it now? To distract her? To not let her do her job?

"Why are you reminding me of this?", Moon asks. While she could be running through all reasons in her head, she was sure that asking is the easier and better solution. At least, this once. Always thinking of all possible solutions is tiring after all.
"I was keeping track of the guest list, since my sister asked me to. You know, because she's also one of the organizers. Today, there were three new names added. And one of them apparently has a direct connection to the previous victims of the 'Lady of Ice'.", Merisu answered casually. Moon almost jumped up at that. "A direct connection? Like, someone who has the possibility of being the 'Lady of Ice'?", Moon asked. She couldn't quite believe it. This could be her chance at finally ending her misery! And, well, of course it could her chance to finally solve this case that she has been working on for too many years.
"Or it could ve another possible victim. Her name is Helen Haag.", Merisu said and handed Moon a file about the mentioned person. Moon's face dropped at that. While it would be better if it was their criminal herself, another possible victim was also not bad. The detective could then catch the "Lady of Ice" right in her act of an attempted murder.

"I don't think I should go. But you should.", Moon says. To be honest, even though she wanted to catch her enemy, she just wasn't really up for a party. She already felt felt like her head will explode because of her constant headaches due to this unsolved case. A party with loud music will make it only worse - and hence will be a disturbance in case the "Lady of Ice" is actually going to appear.
"I'm going anyway because of my sister. And you're going as well.", the slightly older of them said. Then, Merisu gives Moon a look. A very special look. Moon already knows this look. One that literally screams 'Keep your doors and windows shut tonight'¹. Now, Moon is terrified. Moon sighed in defeat. Seems like she had no other choice then.
"Ugh, fine! I'm going. But only if you get me some ibuprofen.", Moon said, giving in. She really didn't want to have to deal with this. Meanwhile, Merisu smiled as if she won the biggest prize in existence. "You got it, Moon!", she said, way too happy in this moment.

Merisu was about to leave - mostly to already get the promised ibuprofen - but stopped in her track, suddenly having remembered something. "By the way, Moon, happy birthday.", she told Moon, smiled at her and left. Moon was slightly surprised. Sure, some people she knows already congratulated her today, but it never fails to surprise her anyway. She smiled when Merisu left, and then continued with her work.
