Sonia, Aleena, and Mindy made it to the first floor of the Penthouse, which had been turned into a cell block.
The prisoners immediately stopped acting like zombies. Some prisoners were asking where they were while some cried for help.
“Tails must’ve shut down the hypnosis track.” Sonia said. “You rescue the prisoners, we’ll deal with Darkerina, Mother.”
“Be careful, sweetheart.” Aleena replied.

Sonia and Mindy cautiously entered the room they were to meet Darkerina.
“Do you see any sign of the Master Emerald anywhere?” Sonia whispered.
“No.” Mindy whispered back.
Suddenly, a floating hooded figure appeared. She had her back to Sonia and Mindy. “Miyu, Minami. I knew you’d catch on.” She said, turning to face them. She pulled her hood down.
“Surge the tenrec.” Mindy replied. “Not a surprise. You kinda were a troublemaker in highschool.”
“And you were a stuck up snob.” Surge said, crossing her arms. “You too, Sonia. By the way, your costumes are pathetic. I knew it was you two the entire time”
Sonia rolled her eyes.
Surge glanced over her shoulder. “Oh, Babe, was I not supposed to say that?”
Sonia raised an eyebrow.
Manic stepped out of the shadows. “I teased her about that before; it’s cool.”
Sonia did a double take at her brother. “Manic?”
“Surprised, sis?” Manic asked. He put his arm around Surge.
Surge smirked.
“Told you it was him, Miyu.” Mindy said.
Sonia groaned. “Shut up.”
“You promised you wouldn’t kill her, Babe.” Manic said, looking at Surge.
Surge huffed. “Okay, fine.” She replied. “It takes the fun out of it, but….”
“Eh… you shouldn’t think that is fun.” Manic said, running his hand through his spines.
“Who’s side are you on, Manic?” Surge questioned.
“Yours… but I never signed up to kill anyone, especially my sister.” Manic said, folded his arms. “I lost a brother. I don’t want to go through that again and I don’t want anyone to feel what I feel every day.”
Surge smacked her hand over her face. “Fine.” She muttered. “Get her to surrender then.”
“Thanks.” Manic replied. “C’mon, sis. It won’t be so bad. You always wanted to be a princess and you have your chance.”
Sonia groaned. “Manic, I was four.” She said exasperatedly. “You also wanted to be a dinosaur and a cyborg when you were that age, do you still want either of those things?”
“Well, I don’t want the dinosaur thing now.” Manic replied. “But….”
“You wouldn’t.” Sonia said.
Manic slid his left shirt sleeve up, revealing a cyborg arm, and grinned. “I totally did.” He replied. “I got more than that, but this is the only visible cyborganic part.”
“I should’ve seen this coming.” Sonia muttered.
“I kinda had to get this.” Manic said, sliding his sleeve down. “Was caught in an explosion a few years back. Comes with the territory, I guess.”
Sonia rolled her eyes. “You’re just a kleptomaniac, you don’t do anything that would involve explosions.”
Manic laughed. “That’s what I told the family to keep from worrying everyone.” He said. “I’ve been in an organized crime ring since I was sixteen.”
Sonia sighed. “A year after Sonic died?”
Manic slumped his shoulders. “Yeah.”
“You think he’d be proud of you?” Sonia asked.
Manic groaned. “Don’t drag him into this.”
“Enough of this.” Surge snapped. “Do you surrender or not?”
“No.” Sonia said.
Surge glared at Manic. “She had her chance.”
Manic turned away. He stared at his feet.
“Manic?” Sonia asked.
“…Sonia, please give up.” Manic said.
Sonia and Mindy reached to activate their medallions.
A green blast of light and electricity zapped the medallions, causing them to break.
Sonia and Mindy gasped.
Sonia looked at Surge “How- oh.”
Surge was glowing a dark emerald green color. She smirked at Sonia and Mindy. “I’m not sorry that I want this to be an unfair fight.”
Sonia and Mindy looked at each other, then nodded.
Mindy ran away while Sonia reactivated her main medallion and flew up to meet Surge.
Surge and Sonia fought for a bit, with Sonia mostly dodging Surge’s electric blasts.
Mindy snuck up behind Surge and activated her medallion. She flew up and kicked Surge in the back.
Surge screamed as she was forcibly separated from the Master Emerald.
Mindy flew over and picked up the Master Emerald. “I’ll take that.” She said, flying away with the giant emerald.
Surge groaned.
Sonia crossed her arms. “So… what was that about an unfair fight?”
Surge turned around. She fired an electric blast from her rings, taking out Sonia’s main medallion.
Sonia quickly lost her Miyu form.
Surge scoffed. “Not so tough without your lame super form now, are you?”
Sonia ran over and kicked Surge in the leg.
Surge collapsed. “I guess that fiancé of yours taught you his combat moves.” She replied. She scrambled to her feet. “Good thing I tried to apply for GUN too.”
Surge and Sonia fought for a while, both were evenly matched.
Surge groaned as Sonia landed a kick in her stomach. “Manic, you want to snap out of your flashback episode and help me?”
“Girls, come on, stop fighting.” Manic said. “I really don’t want to pick sides here.”
Surge punched Sonia, sending her staggering back. “If you-”
Sonia kicked Surge in the back.
Surge stumbled forward and fell out the window. She screamed.
Manic raced for the window.
“Manic, no!” Sonia screamed. She ran to help Manic.
Manic lunged out the window and fell. He caught the window sill with one hand.
Sonia reached the window and started to reach her hand out, but stopped herself.
“Sonia?” Manic asked. “Sonia, please. Please don’t let me die.”
Sonia looked at Manic. “You were gonna sit back and let your girlfriend kill me.”
“I’m sorry.” Manic said, tears forming. “I’m sorry, sis. Please… Sonic would save me if he was in your position. You know he would.”
“You’ll pull me down.” Sonia replied.
“No, sis.” Manic said. “I swear I won’t. Just help me.”
Sonia held her hand out.
Manic started to reach for it, but lost his grip in his other hand.
Sonia grabbed Manic by his shirt and pulled him inside, throwing him a couple of feet.
Manic rolled onto his back and exhaled loudly. “How’d you do that?”
Sonia shrugged. “Adrenaline, I guess?”
Manic sat up. He pulled his knees to his chest.
Mindy, out of her super form, came in
Sonia looked at Mindy. “Can you take care of everything else?”
Mindy nodded. She walked away.
Sonia walked over to Manic and sat down beside him.
“It should’ve been me.” Manic said softly.
“You still love Surge?” Sonia asked.
Manic sighed. “Yeah, but I meant I should’ve died instead of Sonic.” He replied. “None of this would’ve happened if he were here.”
“It could’ve.” Sonia said.
Manic shook his head. “I was going to check on Tails.” He said. “But no, Sonic wanted to do it. I turned to yell at him that I’d do it and… I saw it hit him. The sound still echoes in my mind. Tails and I were the first to check on him.”
Sonia tilted her head back to stop the tears from escaping.
Manic shook his head. “I knew he was gone just by looking at him.” He said. “He even felt lifeless when I was holding him.”
Sonia sniffled.
“Tails kept calling his name, crying.” Manic replied. “I didn’t realize Shadow and Eggman stopped fighting. Didn’t even hear that stupid hovercraft explode. I remember Shadow pulling me away when the EMTs arrived. I had hoped he really was unconscious, that I was imagining he was gone. Then the EMTs called his time of death. I was screaming and Shadow had to hold me to keep me from collapsing. Tails… I didn’t know what was going on at first, but I remember the EMTs wrapping him in a blanket and putting him in the ambulance.”
Sonia held Manic.
Manic buried his face in Sonia’s shoulder. “It’s my fault, Sonia.” He cried. “I shouldn’t have told him Tails was hurt. I was hoping he’d wrap the fight up and I’d check on Tails.”
“You didn’t know that would happen.” Sonia said, rubbing Manic’s back. “Sonic wouldn’t have wanted you to die. If you had checked on Tails, he would’ve saw that thing and ran over to-”
“Spin dash it, not take the hit.” Manic sobbed.
Sonia sighed. “Manic… if it was his time to go, nothing you could‘ve done would’ve stopped it.” She replied. “Remember when Uncle Chuck told us about that car wreck he was in?”
“The one that should’ve killed him.” Manic muttered.
Sonia nodded. “And Mindy’s mother was killed in a simple fender bender.”
“It doesn’t make me feel better.” Manic replied.
“Me either.” Sonia said.
GUN agents and police arrived.
Shadow walked over to Sonia and knelt down. “Is he okay?”
Manic let go of Sonia. “I helped my girlfriend do this.”
“No surprise.” Shadow muttered. “Maybe you can get a deal if you confess to everything. I can vouch for you that you’re not the mastermind.”
Manic nodded. He got up and held his wrists out to be handcuffed.
Shadow handcuffed Manic with electronic shackles.
Sonia got up and went to find Mindy and Aleena.
Aleena walked in as Shadow led Manic out. “Manic? You did this?”
Shadow and Manic stopped.
“I only helped Surge.” Manic replied. “I’m sorry, Ma. I’m sorry.”
Shadow nudged Manic forward. “You can talk to her later.”
