Manic paced back and forth in his and Surge’s cell.
Surge sat on the floor with her knees pulled to her chest.
“They seriously said that?” Manic asked. “Are you sure you didn’t misunderstand anything?”
Surge sighed. “We’ve been over this ten times already.” She replied. “There’s no way I misunderstood any of that.”
“So that’s why they moved you in here.” Manic said. “They’re trying to breed us like cattle.”
Manic punched a dent into the wall.
Surge huffed. “Of course, it’s not like we have feelings or anything.” She said sarcastically.
Manic exhaled slowly and turned to face Surge. He leaned closer to Surge.
“What?” Surge asked.
“Shads and I have a plan.” Manic whispered. “We’re gonna escape as soon as they let us in the gym tomorrow. You move when we move.”
Surge smirked.
*
The next day, Manic and Surge were led to the gym.
Shadow was in the gym already. He looked over at Manic and nodded.
Shadow took off his inhibitor rings and started glowing red.
Manic’s eyes started glowing and electricity started sparking off of his body.
Surge’s eyes started glowing ice blue with yellow-green electricity sparking off of her body.
A GUN agent hit an alarm.
Surge shut off the power with her rings.
Shadow took out some guards with a few kicks and a blast of electricity.
The lights went off briefly, but came back on.
“They have a generator.” Manic said.
Shadow took a few guns off of the agents and handed two to Surge and Manic. “Move.”
The trio raced out of the room, fighting past more soldiers and breaking down whatever doors were closed.
Shadow, Manic, and Surge made it to a lone stretch of unfamiliar road and finally stopped running.
Shadow looked around. “There’s no street signs.”
“There’s a van.” Surge said, pointing at the vehicle approaching them.
“It looks familiar.” Manic said, squinting.
“It doesn’t look like a GUN van.” Shadow said.
Manic grinned as the van slowed to a stop. “That’s my ma’s van!”
Sonic got out of the van.
“Sonic!” Manic called.
Sonic ran over and hugged Manic. “Manic, oh we’ve been looking for you for years.”
“I’ve missed you all so much.” Manic replied. “We were captured by GUN. We just escaped.”
Sonic noticed Surge and Shadow. “Your friends are welcome to stay with us until they can get back on their feet.”
“Thanks, bro.” Manic said. “This is my girlfriend Surge and our friend Shadow.”
“Nice to meet you all.” Sonic said.
Sonia stepped out of the van. “Sonic, is everything okay?”
Sonic turned around. “We found-”
“Manic!” Sonia cried as she ran over to Manic. She hugged him. “Oh, we missed you.”
“Let’s get back inside.” Sonic said.
“Call Mom and tell her we’ll have to go the scenic route.” Sonic said, pulling the van on the road. “We’re not driving by the GUN facility.”
Sonia got her phone out. “Wait. Let’s video call.”
Manic moved to sit beside Sonia.
“Lean away, I’ll let you know when to get in the picture.” Sonia said, calling Aleena.
Manic leaned away.
Aleena answered the call. “Hey, Princess.” She replied. “How far have you gotten?”
“We’re in East Mobius.” Sonia said. “We have to take the scenic route.”
“Why?” Aleena asked. “Was there a wreck?”
“No, GUN is on high alert because it turns out they really had been kidnapping Mobians and three escaped.” Sonia replied.
“Oh, goodness.” Aleena said.
Sonia motioned for Manic. “We picked up one of them.” Sonia replied. She moved the phone so Aleena could see Manic as he slid closer. “See?”
“Hey, Ma.” Manic said, smiling.
Aleena gasped. “Manic?”
Manic’s eyes filled with tears. “Yeah, I missed you, Ma.”
“We missed you too.” Aleena said. “We searched everywhere.”
Manic nodded as he wiped his eyes with his shirt sleeve.
“What happened to your arms?” Aleena asked.
“They were injecting us with stuff.” Manic replied. “Long story. We probably should go and change clothes.”
“We?” Aleena asked.
Manic moved the phone to show Surge and Shadow to Aleena. “My girl Surge and our friend Shadow.”
“Hey.” Surge and Shadow muttered.
“Don’t mind them.” Manic said. “They’re introverts too and we had a long day.”
“We had to fight our way out and run.” Shadow said.
“Okay, you all be careful.” Aleena replied. “Good night; love you, kids.”
“Love you too.” Sonia, Manic, and Sonic said.
The call ended.
Tails walked out of the bedroom, his fur slightly damp. “Sonic, I thought I told you not to pick up hitchhikers.”
“You don’t recognize me, Tails?” Manic asked.
Tails smiled “Manic?” He asked. “Oh, I didn’t recognize you without your piercings and all. Where have you been?”
“GUN kidnapped me, Surge, and Shadow.” Manic replied.
Tails walked over and sat down. “Were you project: Nikós?”
Manic’s eyes widened. “How’d you know?”
“I hacked GUN a while back.” Tails replied. “I got names and a few very vague details. There weren’t any pictures. I thought it was you, but I couldn’t even get a location to try to rescue you.”
“Are you three hungry?” Sonia asked. “We have leftover chili dogs.”
“I’ll take some.” Manic said.
“Same here.” Shadow replied.
“Not my favorite, but I’ll try it.” Surge said.
Sonia got out the plate of chili dogs and warmed them up for Surge, Manic, and Shadow.
Tails got plates out of the cabinet. He helped Sonia put the chili dogs on separate plates.
“Hey, I can eat and drive.” Sonic said, glancing over his shoulder.
“You can’t, there’s a law about that here.” Tails said.
Sonic huffed. “Right. Let me know when you’re done so we can trade places, sis.”
“Of course.” Sonia said.
*
Sonia was driving while Shadow took a shower and Surge and Tails slept in two sleeping bags on the floor.
Manic helped Sonic set up the futon.
“So they were trying to mutate you into three super soldiers?” Sonic asked.
Manic ran his hand through his spines. “Yeah. GUN is pretty sick.” He muttered. He looked over at Sonia and stepped closer to Sonic. “They were even trying to get Surge and I to mate by locking us in the same cell, all because they wanted more super soldiers that they’ve trained from an early age.”
Sonic grimaced. “Ugh.”
Manic sighed. “Yeah.”
Sonic glanced at Surge.
“No, nothing happened.” Manic said. “We were lab rats on display, did you really think anything would happen?”
“No, not at all.” Sonic replied.
Manic yawned. “We can talk later, bro.” He said. He hugged Sonic “Good night, bro. Love you.”
Sonic patted Manic on the back. “Good night; love you.”
*
Sonic took over driving for Sonia. “I could strangle those sadists.” He muttered as he buckled his seatbelt.
Sonia sat in the passenger seat and buckled her seatbelt. “What did Manic say?”
“GUN was trying to get Surge and Manic to make them more super soldiers.” Sonic replied.
Sonia furrowed her brow. “How could they do that?”
Sonic gave Sonia a look. “Sonia. How do you think babies are made?”
Sonia started coughing.
Sonic put his hand on the wheel.
Sonia exhaled slowly. “They’re not having any, are they?”
“No, they’re not.” Sonic replied.
“Did you see anything super about them?” Sonia asked.
Sonic shook his head. “No, but they’re exhausted.” He replied. “I’m sure we’ll find out later.”
“Why don’t you get some sleep?” Sonia asked. “Set an alarm for an hour, then you can take over for me.”
“Thanks, sis.” Sonic replied.
