Early that morning, before the sunrise, Sonia pulled the van into a campground so they could have breakfast.
Sonic got up and yawned. “G’morning, sis.”
Manic whimpered.
Sonic and Sonia looked at each other, then over at Manic and Surge.
Shadow got up and stepped over to Sonic and Sonia. “They’re probably having flashbacks.” He said in a low tone. “I have them too.”
“What do we even say?” Sonic asked. “This whole situation is a nightmare.”
Sonia sighed. “We just listen to them and-”
The lights flickered.
Tails ran out of the bedroom. “What are-”
Sonic, Sonia, and Shadow turned around.
The lights nearly went out.
Manic and Surge were shaking. Their spines were glowing and had electricity sparking off of them.
“They’re causing a power surge.” Shadow said, running over to them. “Help me separate them.”
Sonic ran over.
Shadow pulled Surge away while Sonic pulled Manic away.
Sonic held Manic by his shoulders. “Bro, I-”
Manic’s irises were glowing golden brown with the same yellow green electricity sparking through them.
“Manic, Surge.” Shadow said sternly. “Get a grip on your power. You’ll attract GUN.”
Manic exhaled slowly. His spines and eyes stopped glowing.
Surge’s eyes and spines stopped glowing.
The lights stopped flickering.
“I’m sorry.” Manic said.
“What was that?” Sonia asked.
“Whatever they injected us with did that.” Shadow replied. “I can do it too. We usually have good control over it, but it can go crazy if we’re at one emotional extreme to another.”
“I found some files on GUN this morning.” Tails said. “They were experimenting with Chaos Emeralds. They can cause EMP blasts. Manic and Surge were about to cause one themselves. It’s complicated, and I know you don’t like my science babble, but you can create something like nuclear medicine with it.”
Sonic sighed. “You know, I never believed revenge was right, but it’s hard not to go back on that belief.”
Manic nodded.
Shadow leaned against the counter. “I’m in.”
Sonia shook her head. “No, that won’t change anything that happened.”
Everyone looked around as the sound of engines filled the air.
Sonic looked out the window. “It’s GUN.” He said. “They sent drones and vans.”
Shadow walked past Sonic, brushing against him. “I’ll handle this.”
“I’ll help.” Sonic said. “I fight Eggman on a near daily basis.”
Shadow, Sonic, and Manic headed outside.
GUN agents surrounded them with guns drawn.
Surge stepped outside.
Shadow’s eyes lit up, red electricity sparking off of him. “Did you not get enough of a beating earlier?”
One of the soldiers got electronic shackles ready.
Shadow curled up and spin dashed the soldier.
Manic’s eyes and spines lit up. He spin dashed some soldiers.
The combined blasts from Shadow and Manic caused the lights to flicker.
Sonic and Surge helped them take out the rest of the agents.
“Let’s go before they call in more.” Manic said, walking Surge back inside.
Shadow and Sonic got back inside.
Sonic got behind the wheel and started driving.
Manic sat down beside Surge.
“Shadow?” Tails asked. “How common was it for you to see Mobian agents in GUN?”
“I have never seen one.” Shadow replied.
“Me either.” Manic said.
“I haven’t either.” Surge said.
“My friend Rouge is a GUN agent.” Tails said. “She worked hard to get that position and would be livid if she knew you all were captured.”
“Can she help?” Surge asked.
“She’s been investigating when she can.” Tails replied. He pulled his phone out. “Let me call her.”
