Surge waited by the old car Eggman gave her for Manic, who was working as a locksmith. She noticed Manic approaching her. “Is this the guy?”
Eggman’s avatar popped up, projecting the doctor’s image right in front of her. “Yeah, that’s Manic.” He said. “You’re his type, just flirt with him a bit and he’ll probably ask you out. If he doesn’t, you ask him out.”
“Alright.” Surge muttered.
The avatar disappeared.
“Manic does look cute though.” Surge thought. “I wonder if Eggman can read my thoughts with that tech.”
Manic grinned as he reached her. “Hi.”
“Hey, Cute stuff.” Surge replied.
Manic’s eyes widened slightly. “Uh… I… you called about your car?”
“Yeah, I locked my keys in there.” Surge said.
Manic got to work.
“I hope I didn’t scare him.” Surge thought. “I have no idea what I’m doing.”
“So what’re you doing around four?” Manic asked.
“Nothing.” Surge replied.
“Would you like to get sushi?” Manic asked.
Surge grinned. “Sounds good to me.”
Manic unlocked the car. “Alright.” He said, opening the door. “There you go. You probably need to get this… lanyard band thing for your keys. Just slip it around your wrist. My sister uses one all the time.”
“I’ll do that.” Surge replied. She picked up her keys off of the seat.
“So I guess I should give you my number.” Manic said, pulling his phone out of his hoodie pocket.
Surge pulled her phone out of her cargo pants pocket. “Alright.”
Manic and Surge exchanged numbers.
“So do you want to meet up or for me to pick you up?” Manic asked.
“Meet up.” Dr. Eggman said as his avatar appeared again. “I don’t have your fake house set up yet.”
Surge bit her lip.
“I’m sorry.” Manic said. “Uh, I just thought-”
“No, it’s fine.” Surge replied. “I was thinking of a sushi place. We can meet at… what about Maki?”
“That’s my favorite place.” Manic said. “Alright, I’ll pick you up at about… four thirty.”
Surge grinned. “Sounds good.”
*
Surge sat on her bed, scrolling through Manic’s social media as Eggman and three of the robots brought in some outfits for her to wear. She set her phone on the headboard shelf.
Eggman and the robots dropped the outfits onto Surge’s new bed. “Alright, have a look.”
Surge slid over and looked through the brightly colored outfits. She huffed as she flipped through several flashy low cut and/or too small/short outfits. None of which were anything she’d wear and some of the clothes didn’t look like anything Manic would find attractive.
Dr. Eggman checked his gauntlet, which apparently doubled as a smart watch. “Hurry up. You have to meet that punk in an hour.” He said. “What’s the matter? You don’t like the outfits my robots curated for you?”
“They look like stuff that fashion influencer bat girl wears.” Surge replied.
“Oh, Rouge.” Dr. Eggman said. “Yeah, we bought it through the promo code on her videos.”
“She doesn’t look like Manic’s type.” Surge said, setting the outfits down.
Dr. Eggman shrugged. “Eh, she’s not, but her boyfriend punched him for acting like a perv toward her.”
Surge rolled her eyes. “How old is he?”
“Twenty-two, I think.” Dr. Eggman said.
“Well, I’m not wearing these.” Surge replied. She dug through the rest of the pile and picked up a sleeveless black dress, fishnet tights as well as a fish net long sleeve shirt. “This is fine though. You mind?”
“I won’t access your audio/visual files until you leave.” Dr. Eggman said, walking out with his robots.
Surge waited for them to leave before changing clothes. She slid her sleeveless dress over the fishnet long sleeve shirt and tights.
She only had her doc martens to wear, so she dug through the pile of clothes in the hopes there was a pair of socks to slide over the tights to prevent blisters.
Surge seethed as she found several stacks of black lingerie varying in styles from fairly tame to jaw droppingly wild.
“Sicko.” Surge muttered as she found the socks. She put on the socks, then walked out the door of her room and into the living room.
Dr. Eggman looked up from his book. “What was that?”
“Nothing, I gotta go.” Surge said, putting on her shoes by the door. She grabbed her mini backpack and left.
*
Surge walked into the restaurant, assuming she was to meet Manic inside.
Dr. Eggman’s avatar popped up again. “So we-”
“Are you gonna do this all the time?” Surge asked as she held her phone to her ear. “It's hard to be in the mood for this or anything with you popping up all the time.”
“No, trust me, there’s some things I don’t want to see.” Dr. Eggman replied. “I’m not a weirdo.”
“After seeing that lingerie, I have my doubts.” Surge said in a low tone so no one else could hear it.
Dr. Eggman couldn’t look more shocked and disgusted in his life. “That’s not for me!” He squawked. “That’s for the green pincushion. By the way, if he wants pictures-”
“Ugh.” Surge muttered. She wasn’t about to do that. Aside from simply not wanting to do that, she didn’t need to have someone else potentially blackmailing her.
“As long as we understand each other, I won’t finish that sentence.” Dr. Eggman said.
Surge rolled her eyes. “This scheme better be worth it.”
“It will be.” Dr. Eggman said. “Eggman out.”
The avatar disappeared.
Surge sighed as she stuffed her phone into her backpack. “Okay, just get the poor dope to fall for me, help the psycho with his scheme, and I’m free.” She muttered under her breath. “That’s easy.”
Surge sat down on a bench.
Manic (dressed in a black button up, jeans, and boots) walked in. He had even bought her roses.
Surge got up and walked over to Manic. “Wow, you clean up nice.”
Manic handed Surge the roses. “Ah, you have me beat.” He said. “You’re gorgeous.”
“Thanks.” Surge replied. “That’s sweet of you.”
The waitress led them to the table.
“I called in a reservation.” Manic said, slipping his hand into Surge’s hand.
Surge looked at the roses. She never had anyone buy her flowers before.
Manic and Surge sat down at a nice table in an alcove.
Manic’s sleeves slid up slightly, revealing a tattoo on his left arm.
Surge motioned to the tattoo. “What’s that?”
“Oh, that’s my band logo.” Manic said, sliding his sleeve up.
The logo was a guitar with the words Sonic Underground written over it.
“My brother, sister, and I started it when we were sixteen.” Manic said. “Did gigs for family and school, then started getting gigs for local festivals and clubs. We play music online. I design the posters and my bro’s girl Sally handles our social media. Hopefully, I can quit my day job soon.”
“That’s cool.” Surge replied.
“What about you?” Manic asked.
“Eh, office work.” Surge replied. “I’m a secretary. It’s not that exciting.”
“Hey, you can always work with us.” Manic said. “Sally could use your help.”
Surge nodded. “I’d like that.”
Dr. Eggman’s avatar popped, this time making it look like he was standing on a table. “So would I.”
Surge grimaced and swatted at a fly that, thankfully, gave an excuse for her expression.
“Ah, man, sorry about that.” Manic said, waving the fly away. “They usually don’t have flies here.”
“It’s cool, things happen.” Surge replied.
*
Manic walked Surge out to her car. “That was great.” He said. “I’d love to go out with you again.”
Dr. Eggman’s avatar popped up. “Say yes.” He said. “Go home with him if he wants.”
Surge gave the avatar a look.
Manic frowned. “I’m sorry.” He said, rubbing the back of his head. “I thought we got along well. Did I-”
“Oh, we did.” Surge replied. “I’m sorry, I forgot something I was supposed to do for work. I do want to go out with you again.”
“You sure?” Manic asked.
“Yes, I’m sure.” Surge replied.
“Well, my siblings are going on kind of a double date to the gelato shop near the Green Hills park and then the park tomorrow.” Manic said. “We’re meeting friends at the park, so I guess it’s not a date. You’re welcome to come along anyway.”
“Sounds cool.” Surge replied. “I’d love to go.”
Eggman’s avatar popped up. “Let him pick you up.” He said. “The address is three hundred Eclipse Drive.”
“Sure.” Surge said. “You can pick me up. I can text you my address.”
Manic grinned. “Awesome.” He replied. “So… uh… is it too early to hug you?”
“No, not at all.” Surge said.
Manic hugged Surge. “G’night.”
“G’night, see ya tomorrow.” Surge replied.
*
Surge walked into the living room.
“Great work, Surge.” Dr. Eggman said. “You and Kit had a great day. To reward you, I’ll have the robots serve you breakfast in bed. Just put your order in.”
“So what’re you gonna do with Manic once you take over the world?” Surge asked.
“You’re starting to fall for the loser?” Dr. Eggman asked.
Surge shrugged. “He’s a sweet guy.” She replied. “I never had anyone buy me flowers. Is it going to be a problem if I do?”
“I can spare him as a reward instead of the breakfast in bed thing.” Dr. Eggman said. “Now I realized I hadn’t told you what will happen if you try to double cross me.”
Kit stepped over. “What is it?”
“It’s not going to be good.” Surge said.
“If you cross me, I erase your consciousness.” Dr. Eggman replied. “That will leave you brain dead.”
Surge and Kit gulped. “I’m not gonna cross you.”
“Good.” Dr. Eggman said. “Now, go to bed.”
Surge and Kit headed to their quarters.
*
Surge laid in her bed, staring at the ceiling.
Going against Eggman wasn’t anything she really wanted to do, but she was a little uneasy about how far Eggman would take this scheme.
“What if he doesn’t get info in the next few months?” Surge thought. “How long is he willing to do this? Is he willing to marry me off to Manic? Eh… I think I could deal with that if he’s really this nice. I just don’t think I’d want to have kids. Egghead probably will make me do that if Manic wants them just for his stupid schemes.”
She waited to be scolded by Eggman, but
nothing happened.
“Good, he can’t read my thoughts.” Surge thought.
Eggman’s avatar popped up, projecting the doctor’s image right in front of her. “Yeah, that’s Manic.” He said. “You’re his type, just flirt with him a bit and he’ll probably ask you out. If he doesn’t, you ask him out.”
