Surge got dressed in her black joggers and a black and white TapOut shirt. She snapped on her spiked wristbands and choker as she made her way to the dining room.

Dr. Eggman was already eating an omelet and drinking coffee while having a floating tablet show him the day’s news.

Surge sat down across from Dr. Eggman. “Kit took you up on the breakfast in bed offer, huh?” She asked. She pulled her spines up into a studded wristband she used to hold her thick, long spines up.

A robot puttered over to Surge.

“Just press the button on the coffee bot.” Dr. Eggman said. “It has the recipes for every variety of coffee on Mobius.”

“Hmm, well, I’ll go for cold brew vanilla coffee.” Surge replied. She tapped the button.

The coffee bot served Surge her coffee.

The waiter bot rolled over.

Surge ordered pancakes with strawberries and vanilla custard with a side of blueberry and yogurt parfait.

Dr. Eggman pointed to Surge’s outfit with her knife. “So that’s what you’re gonna wear?”

Surge gave Dr. Eggman a dirty look as she sipped her coffee. “He’s obviously enamored with me without me showing him the goods, why are you being weird?”

“Easy, Surge, I don’t care what you do or wear as long as we get some info on his obnoxious brother.” Dr. Eggman said, holding his hand up.

“How far are you willing to take this?” Surge asked. “Are you gonna make me marry him and have a bunch of kids if this drags out?”

“Hopefully, it won’t take that long.” Dr. Eggman replied. “I’m eager to take over this rock and finally have this town under my thumb. You wouldn’t believe how much money I spend on taxes. Oh, and the garbage pickup fee! Shouldn’t my taxes cover it? Where in blazes is that money going?”

Surge shrugged as the waiter bot served her breakfast.

Dr. Eggman shut off the tablet. “But if it does come to that, I’ll make you a robot nanny to take care of the brats.”

Surge gave Dr. Eggman a blank stare. “Yeah, because taking care of a baby is the only hard part.” She said sarcastically. “Being pregnant or giving birth is super easy.”

“Oh, well… my plan is that we’ll take over this rock this year.” Dr. Eggman said.

Surge cut into her stack of pancakes. “Let’s hope it works that way.”

*

Surge sat on her little house’s steps as she waited on Manic, tying the laces on her Doc Martins.

“Manic probably won’t like me if he finds out I took part in this and Egghead does kill Sonic.” Surge thought. “I just have to keep from getting emotionally attached. I’m sure I can find a flaw or two in him that’ll make it easy to dump him.”

Manic pulled up and parked his car. He got out and walked over to Surge. “Hey, cool shirt.” He said, grinning. “I knew I liked you.”

Dr. Eggman’s avatar popped up. “You obviously know what you’re doing.” He said. “I won’t dictate your clothes again.”

Surge mentally sighed. “Too bad you can’t butt out of the whole thing.” She thought.

“Hey, you okay?” Manic asked.

“What?” Surge asked. “Oh, thanks. I’m sorry. I really need another cup of coffee.”

Manic laughed. “Totally understand that.” He replied. “Come on, we can get coffee gelato. That should perk you up.”

Manic led Surge to the car.

*

Manic and Surge walked to a set of cloth couches in the little gelato shop.

Sonic and Tails were there along with a chipmunk girl and a dark pink female hedgehog.

Shadow was sitting beside the female hedgehog.

“Ah, great.” Surge thought. “Shadow’s here? He’s friends with them?”

Dr. Eggman’s avatar popped up. “Yeah, sorry I didn’t tell you about Shadow to start with.” He said. “I want that joker dead too, by the way.”

The avatar disappeared.

Manic put his arm around Surge’s shoulder. “This is Surge.” He said. “We- well, we only went on one date.”

Surge shrugged. “I can be your girlfriend.”

“Alright.” Manic said, grinning. “Okay, my girl Surge.”

“Nice to meet you, Surge.” Sonic said. “Manic talked about you a lot yesterday.”

Surge laughed. “Yeah, he’s sweet.” She replied. “So I know you’re Sonic.”

Surge motioned to Shadow. “And I know you’re Shadow.”

“Right.” Manic said. He motioned to Tails. “That’s Tails, our adoptive bro.”

Manic motioned to the chipmunk and the other hedgehog. “That’s Sally, I told you about her, and my sister Sonia. Sonic, Sonia, and I are triplets.”

“Cool.” Surge replied. “Nice to meet you.”

“We better get you some coffee gelato.” Manic said, patting Surge on the back.

“They have regular coffee too.” Shadow said. “I need another cup myself.”

Manic slipped his hand into Surge’s hand as he walked her to the counter.

The group followed Manic and Surge.

*

Surge sat on a bench beside Manic at the Green Hills park.

Manic was adjusting the extra hoverboard he brought for Surge.

Dr. Eggman’s avatar, dressed in pink footie pajamas and appearing to sit on a bench, popped up. “Hoverboarding? Be careful with those cyborganics. They cost a fortune.”

Surge groaned.

“I’m sorry it’s taking so long.” Manic said. “Hey, listen, if you’re not into me, it’s okay. Don’t date me out of pity or something.”

“I really do like you.” Surge replied. “I… I drank a lot of coffee.”

“Oh, okay.” Manic said, rubbing the back of his neck. “Well, your board is done. I have to go to the bathroom too, I’ll walk you to the bathroom if you want.”

“Sure.” Surge replied.

Manic looked up. “Ah, here comes Sticks, Rouge, and Knuckles.” He said, motioning to the friends. “One of them will watch our boards.”

Knuckles looked at Surge. “So you finally got a girl to look at, Manic?”

Manic’s face turned red. “Sorry about that again.”

“Stop giving him a hard time, Knuxie.” Rouge said, rubbing Knuckles’ arm. “Congratulations, Manic. Who’s the lucky girl?”

“This is Surge.” Manic replied. “She-”

“She’s a robot.” Sticks said, pointing at her.

Surge froze. “She’s close.” She thought.

“Play it cool.” Dr. Eggman’s avatar said. “The girl is a nutcase.”

“Aw, knock it off, Sticks.” Manic said, holding his hand up. “She’s not a robot.”

“I can feel the WiFi waves radiating off of her.” Sticks replied.

“When did you last sleep?” Manic asked.

“Two days ago.” Sticks replied.

Manic rolled his eyes. “Say, can one of you watch our boards?” He asked. “We drank a lot of coffee at the gelato shop.”

Rouge took the boards. “Go on, Knuxie has to stretch before his run.”

Knuckles snorted. “You know I hate that nickname, bat girl.”

Manic laughed as he walked Surge away. “So, uh, about what Knuckles said.” He said, rubbing the back of his neck. “We were at this fancy gala for Sally’s twenty-first birthday, she’s the mayor’s daughter. Anyway, Rouge had on this silky strapless dress that didn’t fit right. The thing slid completely down, taking her bra with it, in front of everyone.”

Surge cringed. “Ooh.”

“Yeah, so… I didn’t mean to stare.” Manic said. “I was shocked. Knuckles punched me, or that was what I was told when I came to at my ma’s house. He hasn’t let me live it down yet. Rouge is pretty chill about it, probably ‘cause she got paid a hundred bucks as first prize for an embarrassing story contest for some magazine and I heard Shadow covered her with his coat pretty quickly.”

Surge laughed. “Sorry you got punched though.”

“Ah, it’s fine.” Manic said.

Manic and Surge walked into the bathrooms.

Surge noticed Dr. Eggman’s avatar, which was appearing to sit on a baby’s changing table. “Alright, doc, you gotta stop doing this.” She snapped. “Every time you pop up and say junk, it messes me up. Manic’s gonna dump me if you don’t butt out. And, for the love of all that’s holy, put on clothes.”

“I’m wearing jammies.” Dr. Eggman said. “I sense there’s tension.”

Surge glared at Eggman. “Uh, yeah, because you are driving me nuts with your popping up like that dude in Quantum Leap.”

“Oh, I love that show.” Dr. Eggman said, grinning. “We can have a watch party and discuss our theories. I have some fanfiction I’d like someone to beta read, so-”

“No, we are not friends.” Surge replied. “I just work for you. Now let me work in peace.”

“Okay, so should I be an audio only helper?” Dr. Eggman asked. “Or a silent observer?”

“Let’s try the first one.” Surge replied.

“Alright, Eggman out.” Dr. Eggman said. The avatar disappeared.

Surge sighed in relief. “Finally.” She said, turning around. Her eyes widened as she saw Sticks standing there. She cleared her throat. “Oh, I, uh….”

“It’s okay.” Sticks said. “I argue with the voices in my head too.”

Surge laughed nervously.

Sticks headed into the stall. “Your boyfriend is waiting.”

“Thanks.” Surge said over her shoulder on her way out.

Manic was leaning against the wall, drumming his fingers on the concrete post. He grinned. “Hey, babe.” He said. “You ready?”

“As ready as I’ll ever be.” Surge replied.

Manic held Surge’s hand as he led her back to Rouge and Knuckles.

*

Manic walked Surge to her door. “I had fun, we should totally go out again.”

Surge tried not to laugh.

Manic sighed. “I’m glad you thought that was funny.”

“I didn’t know what the skit was that Sonic was talking about.” Surge said. “The fight between you two was funny.”

“You never saw the Gap Girls skit?” Manic asked.

Surge shook her head.

“I’ll show it to you later.” Dr. Eggman said through the cyborganics.

“You gotta watch it later.” Manic said. “I’d come in and watch it with you, but I have to work on Ma’s car. It’s probably too early to meet her and she’ll give you the third degree while I’m working.”

“It’s cool.” Surge replied. “I have some work stuff to go through anyway. So you want to go out Friday? Same time as yesterday?”

“Great.” Manic said, grinning. “I’ll see you then.”

Surge and Manic stood on the step awkwardly.

“Go ahead and kiss me.” Surge said.

Manic kissed Surge.

*

Surge walked into Eggman’s living room. “Okay, switch to silent observer.” She said, sitting down. “That was weird.”

“Fair enough.” Dr. Eggman replied. “I noticed you seem to be falling for that green pineapple.”

Surge put her feet on the coffee table. “And?”

“And we can use that to our advantage.” Dr. Eggman said. “We’ll have even more access to their team info.”

“So how long do you think it’s gonna take?” Surge asked.

Dr. Eggman got up. “It should be a little less than a year.” He said. “Follow me to the lab. I have a surprise for you.”

Surge got up and followed Dr. Eggman to the lab.

Kit was already in the lab, testing out a backpack mounted water sprayer. He fired a blast of water at the targets. One blast was able to turn a corner and hit a target on the other side of a wall.

“Whoa.” Surge said. “I’m impressed. What do I get?”

Dr. Eggman handed Surge two rings and a backpack. “This fires electricity.” He replied. “Just practice on the targets until dinner.”

Kit stopped practicing and hurried over. “We can try to combine our attacks too, ma’am.”

“Don’t call me that.” Surge said.

“Just be careful with the tech.” Dr. Eggman said.

“Sure, boss.” Surge and Kit replied.

Dr. Eggman left the room as Surge and Kit started practicing their attacks.
