Shadow, Surge, and Manic stopped at the fortress.

“So what’s special about this necklace?” Manic asked.

“I don’t have the energy to explain things to you.” Shadow said. “I need you to grab the necklace and bring it back to me.”

Manic cracked his knuckles. “A’ight then.” He said. He slipped through the maintenance hatch undetected, carefully easing over the tripwire.

Shadow kept watch, hoping Sonic didn’t find them or Dr. Starline hadn’t roboticized Sonia.

Manic crawled back out minutes later with a necklace. He handed it to Shadow.

Surge ruffled Manic’s spines.

Shadow stuffed the necklace into his pocket. “Go back to Tails.” He said. “Message me when you get there.”

Manic nodded. He skated out with his new black air shoes.

Shadow and Surge headed to the cell block.

*

Shadow and Surge found Sonia’s cell and blasted it with a Chaos blast.

Sonia ran over and hugged Shadow.

Shadow gave Sonia the necklace.

Sonia put it on.

“Spin.” Shadow said. “Don’t question it, just do it.”

Sonia spun and nothing happened.

Surge snapped her fingers. “I’ll be right back.” She said, running for the lab.

Shadow glanced at Surge. “What is she doing?”

Dr. Starline and Sonic approached them from the other side of the hall.

Dr. Starline clapped his hands. “Well, well, you’re stupid enough to break in after all.”

“Shadow?” Sonic asked.

“Fight it harder, Sonic.” Shadow ordered.

“You turn against me and I’ll make sure you’re gone permanently, Sonic.” Dr. Starline said.

Surge rushed in with a device. “Sonia!”

Sonia looked at Surge as the device lit up.

Dr. Starline pointed at Surge. “Get that from her.”

Sonic rushed toward Surge.

Shadow ran over and blocked Sonic as Surge shut off the machine.

Sonia shook her head. “Oh, my necklace!”

Shadow smirked as Sonia started spinning again.

Sonia regained her super form.

Shadow knocked Sonic down and pinned him. “Sonia, take him to the lab.” He said, sending a message to Tails and the other leaders. “I’ll take care of Starline.”

Sonia grabbed Sonic, waited for Shadow to let go, then flew to the lab.

Surge ran after Sonia. “I can reverse it.”

Sonia laid Sonic on the table.

Surge activated the shackles and got the serum ready. She stepped over to the table and injected the serum into a port in Sonic’s arm. “Go back and fight.” She said, “I’ll be done in a minute.”

Robots flew in.

Sonia fought the robots as Surge activated the machine.

Sonia flew out of the lab and helped Shadow defeat the drones that Starline called in as the rest of the resistance arrived.

An alarm sounded.

“The place is gonna blow.” Shadow said to Sonia. “Get your brothers.”

Sonia flew toward the lab, passing Surge as the latter headed out.

Sonic and Manic were standing in the middle of the lab, hugging each other.

The alarm reached a high pitch sound, then an explosion happened somewhere in the lab.

“Oh, that’s what that sound meant?” Sonic asked as Sonia pressed the emergency button on the wall.

The floor quickly dropped to a bunker in the basement, saving them from the explosion.

Sonic and Manic saw Sonia and froze.

“Ma?” Manic asked.

“You see her too?” Sonic asked. “Are we dead?”

Sonia laughed. “No, you-”

“I’m sorry, Ma.” Manic said, trying to stop himself from crying. “I should’ve asked Sonic to take me to the dentist. We never would’ve been in an accident if I had done that.”

Sonia sighed. “You don’t know why she wanted to take you.” She muttered under her breath.

“I’m so sorry.” Manic cried. “I’d do anything to make it up to you.”

Sonia stepped over to Manic. “Manic, sweetie, it wasn’t your fault.” She replied.

Manic looked up at Sonia.

“I wanted to take you so we could hang out.” Sonia said. “I was busy at work and trying to spend time with your siblings. You were busy at school, drum practice, and art class. I was happy to take any opportunity I could to spend time with you before you headed off to college. It wasn’t your fault that the other car ran the red light.”

Manic nodded.

Sonia hugged Manic. “It’s okay,” She said. “I love you.”

“I love you too, Ma.” Manic replied.

Sonia finally let go of Manic. “I’m proud of you.”

Manic grinned weakly.

“Go that way.” Sonia said, motioning to a door.

“Where does it lead?” Sonic asked. “I never had a near death experience before.”

“Somewhere safe, I promise.” Sonia replied. She used the transport feature on her bracelet and teleported herself to hers and Shadow’s room in the base.
