Rouge led everyone to the main door to talk to the GUN agents that had just arrived.
Shadow noticed Surge and Kit beside him and Sonia. “You should probably go back to the lab, Surge.”
“Why?” Surge asked. “Manic’s supposed to be here soon and his ma is dead. He’d do the same for me if the situation was reversed.”
“Because GUN will at least detain you for several hours as soon as they see you.” Shadow replied. “I’m sure they’d give you a deal to get info and keep the situation quiet, but they’ll definitely question you for a while.”
Surge nodded.
“I can get them to hold off on it and let them talk with Kit, but unless you want them poking around that room, do what I say.” Shadow said. “Manic will understand.”
Surge turned back and headed for the lab.
Kit nodded. “I can take full credit for her part.”
“Why?” Shadow asked. “You don’t have to.”
“Well, I… I mean if I have to.” Kit replied. “We’re both orphans. I felt bad for her that she lost her husband, so I-”
“They’re married?!” Sonia shrieked.
Everyone glanced back at Sonia.
Kit furrowed his brow. “Yeah, right after the Guild dropped them and not long after Starline gave them their cyborganics.” He said. “You didn’t know? I thought Manic would at least tell his Ma even if they got married at the courthouse.”
Sonia sighed. “He kind of shut us out after our brother was killed.”
Kit pinned his ears back. “I’m so sorry.”
The group finally made it outside.
Manic and Uncle Chuck were behind the barricade.
Manic was holding onto Uncle Chuck and sobbing on his shoulder.
Rouge walked over to get Manic and Uncle Chuck inside the barricade while Shadow and Kit talked with one of the agents.
Mindy placed her hand on Sonia’s shoulder. “I am so sorry.”
Sonia wiped her eyes. “I can’t believe she’s gone.”
Tails hugged Sonia. “I’m sorry, sis.” He said. “I tried to save her. Starline destroyed my medallion and my laser gun must’ve been damaged because it only fired a few shots and quit.”
“I know you did your best.” Sonia replied. “I’m sure she was so proud of you.”
“It wasn’t your fault, Tails.” Mindy said. “I’m sure Starline was harder to fight than Eggman ever had the day to be if his drones are a sign of it.”
Rouge led Manic and Uncle Chuck over to Sonia.
Manic and Uncle Chuck hugged Sonia and Tails.
“What happened?” Manic asked.
Tails drew a shaky breath. “Well, there were three corridors and Mom, Rouge, and I were unlucky enough to go down the one Starline was in.” He said. “Starline was a whole lot tougher to fight than Eggman was.”
“I noticed his suit and gloves were starting to lose power, so I took a lucky shot at the weak point.” Rouge replied. “It was a super suit, kind of like Shadow and Sonic’s super forms. Starline took shots at the medallions’ weak points. Only thing that saved Tails was his… well… tails. Unfortunately, your Ma didn’t have time to run away.”
Tails hung his head.
“Sounds like you gave it all you could, Tails.” Manic said, lifting Tails’ chin up to meet his face. “Ma wouldn’t be angry. She’d be glad you were okay.”
Tails bit his lip.
Manic sighed. “I know.” He said. “At… at least she’s getting to see Sonic again.”
Sonia and Uncle Chuck nodded.
Tails hugged Manic as he cried softly.
“It’s okay; I miss her too.” Manic said, patting Tails’ back.
Tails finally let go of Manic.
Manic wiped his eyes as he drew a shaky breath. “Where… where’s Surge?”
“She’s inside.” Sonia said in a low tone. “I’ll take you to her.”

Sonia walked Manic to the lab, where Surge was standing by the tanks.
Surge noticed Manic and hugged him. “I’m sorry.”
Manic nodded. “Thanks, Babe.”
Surge let Manic go as Tails came in.
Manic looked at the tanks, then to Surge. “What’s this?”
Surge motioned to the tanks. “They’re ours.” She replied. “Starline held them hostage and said you were dead to keep me working for him without question.”
Manic stood there, dumbfounded. “We… we’re parents?”
“I know, I was shocked too.” Surge said. “But they look a lot like you, cute stuff. They’re definitely ours.”
Manic looked at the tanks and put his hand on one of them. “Can we get them out?”
“It’ll be another week.” Surge said. “They’re not quite developed yet.”
Manic nodded. “Can they hear us?”
“Maybe.” Surge replied.
“Hey, little dudes.” Manic said, placing his other hand on the other tank.
“One’s a girl.” Surge said.
“Oh, sorry, dudette.” Manic said. “Are they like… a DNA experiment thing or…?”
Surge glanced at Sonia and Tails. “What do the files actually say?” She asked. “I’m not sure if he showed me the real ones.”
Tails stepped over to the computer. He pulled up the files and read for a few minutes before giving a low whistle. “It’s a miracle they’re still here.” He said. “They were saved by an emergency c-section after the battle with Sonia.”
Sonia’s eyes widened. “Oh… but… I… I never would’ve fought her if I knew.”
Manic looked at Surge. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I didn’t know either.” Surge said. “I wouldn’t have risked their lives if I had known.”
Tails looked through the files. “She didn’t know.” He said. “It was too early for her to tell and the sensors in her cyborganic system weren’t functioning. I’m surprised the diagnostic scans picked it up, but Starline’s got some great tech, so that explains it.”
“Okay, so how are we gonna keep the place running if the babies can’t come out yet?” Manic asked.
“Maybe GUN will leave it alone until they’re ready.” Tails replied. “If not, I’ll figure out how to hook it into a back up source so we can haul them to safety.”
Shadow walked in.
“Did you tell them about the babies?” Sonia asked.
Surge and Manic turned their attention to Shadow.
“They’re letting Rouge search the files and will keep the power up until they’re out.” Shadow said. “Once the investigation is over, Tails and Uncle Chuck can take it if they want it. GUN has no interest in it, but they want it in the hands of someone they trust. We’re under a non-disclosure agreement not to say anything about Dr. Starline. GUN wants no trace of their past involvement with Dr. Starline to exist.”
“Fine with me.” Surge said. “So we can stay with them?”
“Yeah, you can stay as long as you don’t interfere.” Shadow replied.
“Maybe we should leave them alone.” Tails said.
Sonia hugged Manic, then left the room with Shadow and Tails.
Manic and Surge sat down by the tanks.
“So have you named them?” Manic asked.
“Just the boy.” Surge said, motioning to the tank on their left. “His name is Glitch unless you want to change it.”
“Nah, I like it.” Manic replied.
“You can name our girl then.” Surge said.
“How about Cyber?” Manic asked.
“You had that picked out for a while, huh?” Surge asked.
Manic laughed. “Yeah, pretty much.”
“I like it.” Surge replied. She slid closer to Manic and leaned against him.
Manic held Surge and stroked her spines as he hummed softly.
“They seemed to like the videos of you singing when I played them for you.” Surge said. “I missed actually hearing you sing.”
“Alright.” Manic replied. “Our favorite song?”
Surge nodded.
Manic sang as Surge fell asleep in his arms.
