Sonia shuffled out of hers and Shadow’s bedroom.

Shadow, who was already up and dressed, set a plate of strawberry pancakes on the table.

“Aww, thank you, sweetie.” Sonia said, hugging Shadow.

“You’re welcome.” Shadow replied.

Sonia and Shadow sat at the table.

Shadow served Sonia and himself their breakfast.

“So why are you dressed up so early?” Sonia asked.

“I was thinking we could go to East Mobius, spend the day there.” Shadow replied. “Go to your favorite shops and restaurants. We can leave as soon as you’re ready.”

Sonia hugged Shadow. “Thank you so much.” She replied. “You really do listen.”

“You’re welcome.” Shadow said. “Happy Valentine’s Day.”

“Happy Valentine’s Day.” Sonia replied.

Shadow and Sonia arrived at downtown East Mobius.

Shadow held Sonia’s hand as he walked her to the coffee shop.

“But didn’t you already have coffee?” Sonia asked.

“I could use another cup and some coffee beans.” Shadow replied. “This is the best place on Mobius to get coffee.”

Shadow and Sonia were first in line.

“Mindy?” Sonia asked. “You work here?”

Mindy sighed. “Daddy said I needed a reality check.” She replied. “So Amy gave me a job here.”

Sonia and Shadow nodded.

“So what can I get you?” Mindy asked.

“One large black coffee, one small iced mocha latte, and a side of coffee beans.” Shadow replied.

“Wait. Coffee beans?” Mindy asked.

“He eats coffee beans.” Sonia replied. “Don’t ask me why.”

“I’m sorry, I don’t think I can sell you just coffee beans.” Mindy said.

Shadow narrowed his eyes. “What do you mean you can’t sell me a small cup of beans?”

“Give him his beans, Mindy!” Amy called from the back.

“Uh… okay, a side of coffee beans.” Mindy said, smiling weakly. “That’ll be twelve even.”

Shadow paid Mindy, then headed for the bathroom.

Sonia stepped aside to wait for the coffee.

Mindy made sure Shadow was inside the bathroom, then leaned over the counter. “Sonia, are you safe at home?”

Sonia sighed. “Yes, I’m fine.” She replied. “I’m sorry. He’s got a good heart, he’s beaten up an abusive guy before.”

“Just making sure you’re okay, girl.” Mindy said, setting the cup of coffee beans on the counter. “I’m happy for you.”

Sonia smiled. “Thanks.”

Sonia and Shadow walked down the sidewalk.

Shadow carried Sonia’s bags. He glanced at Sonia. “It’s not like I Chaos blasted the place.”

“It was still embarrassing, Shadow.” Sonia replied. “Mindy thought you might be abusive.”

Shadow stopped walking. “What?” He asked. “Why would she think that? I beat up Rouge’s ex because he was abusive.”

“I told her that.” Sonia replied. “She was happy for us.”

Shadow nodded.

That evening, Sonia and Shadow waited to be seated at Sonia’s favorite restaurant.

“Please don’t call guacamole ‘revenge guac’.” Sonia said.

Shadow gave Sonia a look. “Your brother would do that, not me.” He replied. “I know how to conduct myself in public.”

“But you ordered coffee beans.” Sonia said.

“I don’t see that as any different from ordering salad dressing on the side.” Shadow replied.

“Fair enough.” Sonia said.

Sonia and Shadow settled on their porch, watching the sunset.

“I’m sorry I embarrassed you.” Shadow said.

“It’s okay, I put ‘revenge guac’ in your head.” Sonia replied. “Thanks, I enjoyed the trip in spite of that.”

Shadow kissed Sonia. “You’re welcome.”
