Sonic and Sally met Sonia and Shadow at the door of the Mobotropolis steakhouse.
Sonia furrowed her brow. “I thought you were driving Mother here, Sonic.”
“No, Uncle Chuck got her a spa day thing, so he and Tails dropped her off at the salon while he took Tails to the bookstore.” Sonic said. “They’re on their way. So who’s dropping off the massage chair?”
“Knuckles.” Sonia replied. “He said he didn’t have anything better to do since Rouge and her mother are at a weekend retreat.”
Sonic led the way inside.
Surge, with her spines down and in a nice dress, and Manic (who was dressed in a button up and boots) stood by the door.
Kit, dressed in a button up with a tie and boots, walked out of the bathroom.
“Wow, I’m impressed.” Sonic said. He noticed Manic’s black studded wristband. “I’ll let that pass since it’s not noticeably studded.”
Manic smirked.
Surge leaned against the wall. “Is Aleena here yet?”
“They’re on their way.” Sonic said. “What’s with you? Did you and Manic fight?”
“No, it’s complicated.” Manic said.
Sonia gasped. “Oh, I’m so sorry.” She said softly. “Sonic and I didn’t think you’d have… we… we didn’t know you couldn’t have kids.”
Surge flinched. “What the heck are you talking about?”
Manic smacked his hand over his face.
Sonia bit her lip. “Uh… I thought… I….”
“Sis, she hates to dress up and doesn’t always feel like socializing.” Manic replied. “I thought you knew that by now.”
Sonia shrugged.
“Neither does Shadow, but he’s not as grouchy about it.” Sonic said, motioning to Shadow.
“Maybe because his clothes are more comfortable than mine.” Surge muttered.
Manic sighed. “I know you hate bras with a passion, babe.” He said. “Please, spare me the tangent. I heard it the whole way to Kit’s house and here.”
Kit nodded slowly.
Surge scoffed and shook her head.
“She’s not feeling great.” Manic mouthed to Sonia and Sonic.
Sonic and Sonia nodded.
Uncle Chuck, Aleena, and Tails finally arrived.
Aleena hugged her triplets. “Aww, thank you so much.”
“You’re welcome.” The triplets said. “Happy Mother’s Day.”
Aleena noticed Manic. “Oh, you look so much like your dad without all those piercings.”
Manic laughed nervously. “Uh… thanks.”
“Wait, I thought you were going to get our table for us, Manic.” Sally said.
“I did, but they lost our reservation or something.” Manic replied. “So we’re waiting for one.”
Sonia sighed. “Great.”
“If you’re hungry, snatch a roll off of someone’s plate.” Manic said, motioning to the dining area. “I’ll give you twenty bucks if you do.”
Sonia looked at Manic as if he’d grown another head. “No, what is wrong with you?”
“Surge and Kit did it.” Manic said.
Surge smirked. “It was fun.”
Kit nodded.
Aleena shook her head. “I’m surprised you three aren’t in jail yet.”
Manic shrugged.

The family finally got their table and sat down.
Manic looked through the menu. “The steak does look good.”
Sonic glanced at Manic. “I thought you wanted sushi.”
“I do.” Manic muttered. “I can’t get it.”
“Don’t listen to Sonia.” Sonic replied. “It’ll be fine.”
“It’s not Sonia.” Manic said, leaning closer to Sonic. “Do not say anything, but Surge is pregnant and she can’t have any, so now I can’t. Unless….”
Sonic sighed. “I can’t with this.”
Manic furrowed his brow.
“Congratulations though.” Sonic said.
“Thanks.” Manic replied.
Sonia glanced at the menu in Shadow’s hands. “The sushi does look good.”
Surge seethed.
“I agree, Surge.” Sonia said, glancing up from the menu. “It probably isn’t the best idea to order fish in a steakhouse.”
Manic leaned closer. “Babe, you can’t police their meals.” He said in a low tone. “Unless you want to announce it, hush.”
Surge glared at Manic.
Manic sighed. “Babe….”
“You got something you want to share with the group, Manic?” Shadow asked.
Manic froze.
Aleena looked at Surge. “What are you saying to my son?”
“She’s not abusive, Ma, she’s just in a mood.” Manic said exasperatedly.
“Go ahead and tell them.” Surge muttered.
“It was a little too early to announce it, but Surge is pregnant.” Manic replied.
Aleena and Sonia squealed.
Aleena got up and hugged Surge.
Surge grimaced.
“Ma, you know she hates to be hugged.” Manic said, rolling his eyes upward.
Aleena let go of Surge. “I’m sorry.” She replied. “Congratulations, you two.”
“Thanks.” Manic and Surge said.
Finally, a waiter came to take their orders.
*
Some time later, the group was still waiting on their food.
Kit and Manic were heading back to the table as Shadow headed for the bathroom.
Aleena looked over at Manic, Tails, and Shadow. “What are they talking about?”
“Maybe Manic asked for the manager while he was up.” Uncle Chuck said.
Manic and Kit sat down at the table.
Sonic groaned. “I’m so hungry.”
“Then do what we did.” Manic replied.
“You are gonna get us kicked out, bro.” Sonic said.
“Fine with me.” Surge replied. “I get that it’s crowded, but Mobians who came in ahead of us already have their food.”
“Kit, are you eating the steak sauce?” Sally asked.
“I’m hungry.” Kit whimpered.
Tails quietly slid his empty bag of apple chips into his hoodie pocket.
“This is like that Seinfeld episode where they’re waiting for a table at the Chinese place.” Manic muttered as he drummed his fingers on the table.
Aleena sipped her tea. “I’m tempted to say we should go to a drive thru.”
“Most of them are slow too.” Sonia replied. “Except Chick fil a, but it’s closed on Sundays, right?”
Surge huffed. “Can anyone make up their minds what we’re gonna do?” She asked. “I’m starving.”
“Here comes Shadow.” Sonic said, glancing back. “We’ll put it to a vote in a minute.”
Shadow came back to the table. “Still nothing?”
Sonia shrugged.
“I ought to do what Manic’s been doing and snatch sushi off of other Mobians’ plates.” Shadow said.
Manic’s eyes widened.
Surge glared at Manic. “You’ve been eating sushi?”
Manic grinned nervously. “He’s… he’s joking…?”
“You’ve been eating sushi after you agreed you wouldn’t?!” Surge yelled.
Sonia cringed. “Surge, do you mind-”
“Do you mind shutting up, Sonia?!” Surge snapped. “This is your brother’s fault! I told him the hostess probably mistook him for a porcupine and that’s why we lost the table!”
Manic touched Surge’s shoulder. “Babe, chill.”
Surge brushed Manic’s hand away. “You started this.”
Finally, a waiter came over. “Okay, we’ve had a few complaints about the noise.” He said. “Can you keep it-”
“Can you hurry up and bring our food?” Surge questioned. “We’ve been waiting an hour and nothing. What the heck are you doing?”
“They’re probably spitting in our food or worse.” Tails muttered.
Sonia buried her face in Shadow’s shoulder.
Shadow rubbed Sonia’s arm. “I won’t say anything.”
*
Manic held Surge, who was crying on his shoulder, as he followed everyone out of the restaurant.
“At least they only banned Surge and Manic.” Sonic said.
“I’m just really hungry.” Surge cried.
Manic sighed as he rubbed Surge’s back. “I know, Babe.” He said. “I don’t blame you. We were all thinking it. You had the guts to say it.”
“Sorry, Mom.” Sonic replied.
“I’m so sorry, Ma.” Manic said.
“It’s… you tried, kids.” Aleena said. “I appreciate the gift and the effort.”
“Okay, Shadow and I will get takeout at another place and meet you all at Mom’s house.” Sonic said.
Sonic and Shadow handed Sally and Sonia their keys, then raced off.
Kit sighed. “I would’ve given them the money for it.” He said, holding out the money he had in his hands.
“Aw, you saved up your money for this?” Sonia asked.
Kit furrowed his brow. “No, I found it for free on the tables.”
Everyone gave Kit shocked looks.
“That is the tips for the wait staff.” Sally said.
“They didn’t exactly earn it with us.” Manic replied.
Aleena smacked Manic on the back of his head.
Manic yelped. “Ma, that’s your ring hand.” He said, rubbing his head.
“That’s still not right, Manic Edsel Hedgehog.” Aleena scolded.
Kit snickered. “Your middle name is Edsel?”
“It’s a family name.” Manic muttered. “Put the money back, Kit.”
Kit headed back to the restaurant.
Aleena sighed. “Alright, meet you at the house.”
