“Alright, we got our first concert on Emerald island.” Manic said, grinning.
“We?” Sonic asked.
Manic looked at Sonia. “You didn’t tell him?”
“Please, Sonic.” Sonia begged. “We can still look for the Chaos emeralds and play music. You always sing and play guitar, why not do that and see Mobius as we look for the emeralds?”
“Whoa, you sing and play guitar?” Manic asked. He grinned. “Awesome!”
Sonic looked at Manic. “You don’t have many musician friends, huh?”
Manic shook his head. “No, I don’t.” He said. “I wanted to actually form a band, but I never knew anyone who played an instrument.”
Tails leaned on the desk. “So I will be the one to find the emeralds.”
“No, I can run to get the emeralds and get back in time.” Sonic said.
“Hey, Shads is fast.” Manic replied. “He could help when he has a day off.”
“Eh, Shads will get annoyed with Sonic.” Surge said, handing Glitch his book.
“Maybe.” Manic replied. “But we do need his help.”
Manic called Shadow and put the phone on speaker.
“Who is this?” Shadow asked.
“It’s Manic, I thought I gave you my number.” Manic replied.
“Oh, yeah, I didn’t look at the name.” Shadow said. “What do you need?”
“Ah, it’s a long story, but we’re okay.” Manic replied. “Got back on my feet and some new friends need your help to find these… they’re called emeralds, but….”
“Wait. I found an odd purple gem the other day.” Shadow said.
Sonic snatched the phone from Manic. “Do you still have it?”
“Who is this?” Shadow asked.
Manic took the phone back. “My new friend and band member Sonic.” He replied. “He needs the Chaos emerald.”
“Where are you?” Shadow asked.
Sonic pulled a ring out. “Where is he?”
“I’m at home.” Shadow said. “But what does that have to do with anything?”
Sonic handed the ring to Manic. “Think of where he is, then toss it.” He said. “Shadow, get ready to step through the portal with the emerald when it pops up.”
“Give me a minute.” Shadow said.
Muffled footsteps were heard.
“Got it.” Shadow said. “I’m in my living room.”
Manic did what he was told, then tossed it.
A portal appeared and Shadow stepped through the portal.
Shadow held up a purple Chaos emerald. “What is this?”
Tails took it and put it in a case. “Thanks, Shadow.” He said. “You just helped save the world.”
Shadow raised an eyebrow. “What does it do aside from powering up my generator when the company has to fix the lines?”
“It can be used to power weapons.” Tails said. “You can take out half the planet with one of these.”
Manic sighed. “How do you know that?”
“Studies.” Tails said.
“I can believe that.” Shadow replied. “That thing powered up half of my block a few days ago. A bird fried itself on the line while I was in the middle of something, got angry about it, then that thing started glowing and my power came on.”
“It reacts to brain waves and body heat.” Tails said. “Usually the ones tied to emotional states.”
Surge looked at the emerald. “How?”
Tails sighed. “This will sound crazy, but I think they came from aliens.”
“You bring out those holograms, rings, and Chaos emeralds and you think aliens will be less believable.” Manic said flatly.
“I guess you have a point.” Tails replied.
Sonia took the emeralds and put them in her backpack. “Okay, I’m gonna take these to Mother.” She said, sliding the backpack over her shoulders. “You all talk to Shadow about the plans.”
“Plans?” Shadow asked.
Sonia glanced at Shadow. “Please stay until I get back.”
Shadow shrugged. “I don’t have anything better to do.”
Sonia tossed a ring into the air and stepped through the portal.
Sonic sighed. “Pull up a chair, Shadow.”

Shadow nodded. “We need to get them before GUN finds them.” He said. “They’ll use them to make weapons. I’m not sure who’s worse: GUN or the echidna.”
Sonic sighed. “Oh, man, did I ever mess up.”
A ring portal opened up.
Sonia stepped through the portal.
“Did you tell Mom about your side quest?” Sonic asked.
“Yes.” Sonia replied. “She said we can help Manic through the rest of the tour, help him get established so he can go solo.”
Sonic and Tails exchanged glances and shrugged. “Alright then.”
“As long as we use the tours to find the emeralds, Mother will be fine with it.” Sonia said. She glanced around. “Where’s Sally, Surge, and Manic?”
“Sally is getting their friends to help and Surge and Manic are putting the kids to bed.” Sonic replied.
Sonia sat down beside Shadow. “It’s nice to meet you, Shadow.”
“Nice to meet you too.” Shadow said.
Manic walked back in. “Hey, we all should probably get some sleep.” He said. “We gotta leave early.”
“We’ve got the rings.” Sonic replied. “We don’t have to rush.”
“We do if we want to find those emeralds.” Tails said, getting up.
“He’s right.” Sonia said.
Shadow got up. “I’ll be back as soon as I can.” He said. “I’m gonna pick up some things from home.”
“Do you need a ring?” Sonic asked.
“I can use my speed.” Shadow replied. “But thanks.”
Shadow left the room.
“Thanks again, everyone.” Manic said. “This really means a lot to me.”
“Aww, you’re welcome.” Sonia replied.
“G’night.” Sonic said, getting up.
Tails followed Sonic out of the room.
“Listen, if things don’t go well, you and your family always have a home on the island.” Sonia said.
“Thanks.” Manic replied.
Sonia and Manic headed to their rooms.
“We?” Sonic asked.
Manic looked at Sonia. “You didn’t tell him?”
