"Ryan?" Sophia said surprised. "What are you doing here?"

"Can I come in?" I whispered. I was still in shock from what had happened. My dad had never done anything that could possibly hurt me. His words repeated in my head.

"You'll grow up to become nothing. NOTHING. You are completely hopeless"!

"You are good for nothing. You useless boy. If you don't toughen up you'll be eating nails for breakfast and tacks for snacks." Sophia just stared at me for a moment then let me in. She lived in a big house. Bigger than i had ever been in. When she had given me her address i knew it was in the fancy side of town, but I had no idea that she had it that good. I walked into a big hall, i looked up and saw a big fancy chandelier hanging from the ceiling. I completely forgot about Sophia and just stared at my surroundings.

"I know its kinda big. I don't like people knowing that I'm kinda rich. I don't want people to think I'm a snob or anything." she said blushing.

"Nooo. I don't think you're a snob. I've just never been in such a big house." Now it was my turn to blush. I looked awkwardly at her, then turned quickly away. I thought the awkward silence was never going to end.

"Hello there" I looked up and saw a woman in her forties walking towards us. She was wearing a fancy suit and pearls decorated her neck and ears.

"Hi." I smiled shyly.

"Well, you must be Ryan." What. How did she know that? I looked confused at Sophia. She was staring at the floor embarrassed.

"Yes. I'm Ryan Ross" I said shyly.

"Well, welcome to out home. Sophia show him your room or something. I'll bring you some snacks in a moment." Mrs. Carter smiled at us and left us alone in the hall.

"Uhm. That was my mom." Sophia said breaking the silence. "So, you wanna come and see my room? Its just right upstairs."

I quietly nodded my head and followed her up the stairs. She led me down a long hallway to a room at the end of it. There was a sign on her door that said "Sophia" with golden letters. She took one quick glance at me before opening the door.

Her room was huge. The first thing i noticed were the red walls with posters all over them. She had a double bed in the end of the room with lots of pillows spilled over it. When i walked more into the room I noticed her huge CD collection. I practically ran over to it in excitement. I didn't really have money to buy cd's I always had to find someone that could loan them to me. And it sucked.

"I see you like my CD collection," she said, grinning as she walked over to me.

"Yeah, you're so lucky. I don't really have the money to buy cd's." I said looking through the them. She had many artists that i liked. Could this girl be anymore perfect?

"Well, I could loan you some cd's if you like anything i own." She said smiling.

"Really? That would be so great!" I said and looked excitedly at Sophia.

"Anytime" she walked over to her bed and sat down, putting her iPod on.

"Hey I really like this song! Its Fall Out Boy right?" I said and picked up a Fall Out Boy CD.

"Yeah, I'm really into them at the moment. I think they are really good, and i just love their lyrics" She said and started singing with the song. "Tonight the headphones will deliver you the words that i can't say, a million miles away."

"Can I borrow their cd?" I said holding it in my hands.

"Yeah, sure."

I walked over to the bed and took a seat next to her. I opened the cd case and started to read through the lyrics.

"So, what brings you here?" She said trying not to sound too curious.

"Well, its my dad. But I kinda don't wanna talk about it" I said simply and avoided her gaze.

"Oh, okay." Sophia started playing with her hair. I shouldn't have said that. I could see that she was not comfortable anymore. This was awkward.

I stood up and walked towards her desk in the other end of the room. There was a laptop sitting on it and the wall above it was clustered with photos of her with her friends. She was smiling on every single photo. A smile appeared on my face. She looked so beautiful. Was I really falling for this girl?

I took my eyes of the wall and a brown notebook that was sitting on the desk caught my eye. 'Sophia's DON'T read.' was written on the cover. I picked it up and grinned at Sophia. "What's this?"

Her eyes widened. "DO NOT READ THAT!" She said horrified and ran over to me and tried to snatch the book out of my hands.

"Why? What does it say?" I said playfully and held the book high in the air while she jumped up and down trying to get it.

"RYAN! Pleeease give me the book!" She said trying to hide her smile. "I'm serious! GIVE IT!" She added and kicked me in the foot.

"OW!" I whined and she got the book from my hands. A wide grin spread across her face as she slowly walked backwards away from me.

"HEY. That was unnecessary!" I said and smirked at her, she was holding the book tightly with both hands. "What does it say anyways?" Yes. I can be too curious sometimes.

"I'm not telling you" she said, loving the way she was torturing me.

"Pleeeeeese! I gotta know" I whined and put on my puppy pout. I neared her until i was standing only inches from her face.

"Not gonna work." She said and looked in my eyes. The delicate features of her face were formed into a small smirk. I gazed into those blue eyes and started to lean in closer to her face. I stopped when I was almost touching her lips. That's when I snatched the book from her hands.

Her eyes widened in shock, confused about what had just happened. Then she realized that the notebook was missing from her hands. "RYAN. I´M GONNA KILL YOU IF YOU OPEN THAT BOOK!"

My heart was racing. I ran to the other side of the room. I could still feel her breath playing with my face. I held the book tightly in my hands.

"Okay, but PLEASE tell me what it says" I whined and pouted.

"It's just. You know some poems and stories and stuff. Key? Just some personal stuff" She said walking over to me with a defeated look on her face. I handed her the book and crossed my hands.

"Can I read some of it?" I asked seriously. I think she was surprised by my seriousness.

"Eh, I don't know, it's, it's not that good." She said shyly.

"Let me be the judge of that." I said gazing into her eyes.

"Well. Fine, but you have to do something for me instead." She said loosening her grip on the book. I thought for a second about what I could do. Then I noticed an acoustic guitar in one corner of the room.

"Okay, If you show me some of your poetry I'll play you a song I've been working on for my band." I said smiling at her.

"Deal. But you have to go first." She said and a smirk appeared on her face.

"Okay, but you have to promise to show me something from that book of yours!" I said picking the guitar up.

"I promise," She said, smiling. I walked over to her bed, sat down and took up the pick.

"Okay, I haven't finished this song or even found a name for it, but here it goes." The pick connected with the stings and I started to play the song.

Watch your mouth
your speech is slurred enough
That you just might swallow your tongue
you'd want to give up the ghost
With just a little more poise than that.

Or was it God who chokes
In these situations, running late?
No, no, he called in, he called in.
The hospice is
A relaxing weekend getaway
Where you're a cut above all the rest
Sick and sad patients
On first name basis with all the top physicians

When I finished playing the last chord the room fell completely silent. I put the guitar back from where i had taken it from and sat quietly on the bed again.

"Wow Ryan, you're really talented," She said, amazed. I couldn't help but to wonder if she got the real meaning of the song. Then I smiled shyly at her. "Now, it's your turn."

She picked up her notebook and started looking through the pages of it. She stopped at one page and handed the book to me, blushing.

Today is a winding road
that's taking me to places that I didn't want to go
Today in the blink of an eye I'm holding on to something
and I do not know why I tried

I tried to read between the lines
I tried to look in your eyes
I want a simple explanation
For what I'm feeling inside
I gotta find a way out
Maybe there's a way out

Your voice was the soundtrack of my summer
Do you know you're unlike any other?
You'll always be my thunder, and I said
Your eyes are the brightest of all the colors
I don't wanna ever love another
You'll always be my thunder.

I stared at the white paper. That was a great poem.

I read through it again. This was about somebody, that she certainly liked. I glanced at her. She was biting her nails nervously.

"So what do you think?"

I just stared at the page for a second. She liked someone, and it was probably not me. I don't know why, but i felt tears forming in my eyes. Not wanting Sophia to see it I just stared at the floor for a moment, until I got rid of the urge to cry.

"It's really good Sophia. And by that I mean really, really good." She smiled shyly at me and I handed her the book. For a moment we just sat on the bed staring in each other eyes. I felt the urge to kiss her but i couldn't help but think of that poem, and how it was probably written about someone else.

The both of us practically jumped in shock when someone knocked loudly on the door.

The door was opened and Sophia's mom appeared with a plate of cookies and a bowl of m&m's in her hands.

"Hi guys, here you go, have fun" She said, handing Sophia the treats and the walked out of the room closing the door after her.

I was on my way home when i realized that I was supposed to meet the guys at Spencer's grandma's house after school. i quickly whipped out my cell phone and dialed Brendon's number.

"Hello?"

"Hi, its Ryan." I said feeling guilty.

"Where have you been? I thought we were supposed to meet at Spencer's grandma?"

"Yeah, I know, I'm so sorry, I had to baby-sit Claire for the day and forgot to call you guys" I lied. Claire had learned to take care of her self long ago. I just didn't want them to know that I had been with a girl instead of them.

"But we waited all day!"

"I said I was sorry"

"Whatever dude." The line went dead.

Great. Now they were mad at me. Did I really need more problems? It was not just that things were horrible at home, I had found out the only girl I had really connected with liked someone else. And now my best friends were mad at me. Could things get any worse?

I walked up the driveway to my house, it was empty. That was strange, it was 8 pm and my mom was usually home from work by now.

The house was completely quiet. I closed the door behind me and walked into the kitchen. It was empty. It was then when I heard distant crying. It was coming from Claire's room. I ran over there and found Claire crying on the floor.

"Claire, what's wrong? Where are mom and dad?"
