Mikey watched her until she disappeared around the front of The Starting Line's bus. He couldn't quite grasp what had just happened. This girl, this amazing girl had just destroyed him completely and walked right back out of his life as fast as she had come into it.
Insane.
He wasn't sure exactly how it happened. It was all more of a blur than he would have liked it to be. He had been at the catering area, that much he knew. This girl had been serving the Quizno's sandwiches that had been catered in for the day and they had made eye contact. That much was certain. Then it got a little insane and he wasn't sure what was actual reality. When she'd asked him what he wanted he could vaguely remember blurting out "you" and trying not to turn ten shades of red. Then, when she had gotten him his real order he took a napkin and asked her for a pen. She had smiled and given him one and he had written on the napkin for her to meet him behind the catering stand in five minutes. Even as he walked away he couldn't figure out what had possessed him to do that. He'd never done that before. He wasn't exactly the type of guy that had things come to him that easily but he took comfort in the fact that she would no way in hell be showing up. It wasn't like she was some groupie chick just waiting for him to ask her to meet him. He had just hit on the catering girl who was just trying to do her job. He'd already decided that he had to skip dinner and save himself the embarrassment of seeing her again.
Five minutes later he stood back behind the catering area on the off chance that she might show up. He was astonished when he saw her come around the corner.
"I only have like 5 minutes for break," she informed him.
He couldn't form words that didn't sound completely stupid in his head but he knew he couldn't just stand there. He didn't know how or why he ever got the courage up, probably from complete lack of though altogether, but he kissed her. He didn't say a word, he just kissed her and she didn't pull away or smack him or anything he was sure she would do. She kissed him back and she tasted amazing and her skin felt unbelievable and his head spun.
"We can't stay here. Someone will see us and I'm supposed to be working," she breathed.
She then did something that shocked him even more. She headed towards the employee restroom area and gestured for him to follow. Once inside of the men's restroom she pushed him up against the door and resumed the kiss that he had begun.
That led him to that current moment when he watched her disappear, while standing in the front of his bus in nothing but a towel.
He wasn't sure how it ended up with her walking away. He didn't do shit like that. He didn't have sex with random girls. Hell, he rarely even talked to girls. He had lost a lot of respect for some of the guys he knew who would take groupies back to the bus and just have sex with a girl they would never talk to again. Now he had just done it. He didn't mean to. He didn't know what made him do any of what he had just done but afterward it had never occurred to him that he would never talk to this girl again. He didn't want her to get up and go. He wasn't sure he wanted her out of his sight ever again. But she had gone. He wished he could understand why. She didn't strike him as the type to just have sex with random guys but he wasn't the best judge. She didn't seem like she was incredibly happy about the way things had turned out. She didn't just get dressed and tell him it was fun or ask him if he happened to know where she might be able to find Ken Vasoli or anything. She seemed almost sad about the whole thing. He felt it because as she left that was the way he felt too.
He was still in his own head when he heard a loud pounding on the bus door.
He'd forgotten it was locked. He'd forgotten life existed outside his own head.
"Mikey! You know I love you dude but why are you standing in the front window of the bus with nothing on but a towel? Trying to turn on Frankie?" leave it to Pete Wentz.
"Uh, no I just woke up," completely unbelievable excuse.
"Dude, on your bus, I wouldn't sleep in the nude in the middle of the day if I were you," he laughed.
"You're probably right. Hey, can I ask you a question? You know since you're like 'Pete the All-knowing' on your web site now or do I have to ask you a question on there to get it answered?"
It was always good to fuck with Pete at any given opportunity.
"Well, you know I make everybody go through the same route but for my fellow Sweet Little Dude I guess I can make an exception. That is after you go put on some clothes."
Couldn't really argue with that. Besides, he could explain a lot of things but being naked around Pete wasn't one of them.
"Better?"
"Much. So what's the problem?" he had made himself comfortable at the table in the front lounge.
Mikey figured he may as well sit and get comfortable himself.
"So, I slept with this girl..."
"OK, I think I need to prepare for his one a little better," he resituated himself. "When did this happen?"
"Today before you knocked on the bus door."
"How long before I knocked on the bus door?"
He didn't see what that had to do with anything.
"Like she rounded the corner and you pounded on the door," fill him in.
"Explains the lack of clothing but it's not nice to lie Mikey. So, the rest of the story is?"
"I didn't know her," he started and led into the cliff's notes version of the story, including his current feelings on the matter.
Pete listened and nodded and actually looked like he might have a clue what he was talking about once he got his chance. It almost made him laugh.
"So, this girl, she's catering today?" was how he started instead as if he had gone deaf or gotten lost somewhere in the story.
"Yes."
"And you came on to her not the other way around? You're sure of that?"
"Yeah."
"Little Mikey way came on to a girl and actually got some play. I'm so proud of you. You're growing up so quickly!" he gushed like a moron.
"How is this helping?"
"Sorry! Damn, touchy much?"
"Pete!"
"Fine. OK. So you had sex with the catering girl and I'm taking it that you want it to be more than just sex with the catering girl. She doesn't seem to be a groupie which is good but Mike, she did sleep with you and she doesn't know you and she didn't seem to want it to be more so maybe it's close."
That wasn't really what he wanted to hear.
"But you didn't see her man. It was like she was as messed up as I was about it. It was like something we couldn't help but we both kind of wished it hadn't happened that way anyway. I don't regret it happening. I'd be lying if I said it wasn't amazing but it was the way it happened."
"Well dude, you were here. I wasn't. Maybe she'll call or maybe if you don't want to sit and wait by the phone you could go see her. Maybe she felt weird about it. Maybe she felt like another statistic."
"Pete, you are a genius. But what if I chicken out?"
"Whatever you did to shut your brain off to get with her? Do it again, " he shrugged like Mikey had a clue what that was.
"Thanks man."
"Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So does this mean you weren't really naked to get Frankie's attention then?" again with being an idiot.
"No way in hell."
"Good. Stay away from Frankie. He's mine."
He just didn't want to know. The Frankie/ Petey joke was getting a little over the top.
There was no sign of Jen at the catering booth. He stood back and watched for several minutes hoping that she would come out of wherever she was. No such luck. That meant he'd either have to leave it or talk to someone else and the only other person up there was another girl.
Great.
"Uh...is uh, Jen around?"
She looked at him like she wasn't sure she was hearing what he was saying. Maybe she couldn't. He wasn't sure it actually came out loud enough for her to hear.
"Do you know...Jen??" try, try again.
"Jen? Uh, she's...she went to get some more meat and cheese from the restaurant. She isn't feeling well so she needed to get some air," she stuttered out.
"Oh. Well, do you...is she coming back?"
This was getting awkward.
"I don't really know. The heat was really getting to her. I'm sorry but aren't you...Mikey Way?"
And it gets worse. He didn't think that was possible.
"Yeah, I guess I am."
"How do you know Jen?"
How to answer that question?
"I uh, well truthfully I think I hit on her earlier. I asked for her phone number and she told me wasn't sure. So if she doesn't come back I don't have a chance to change her mind," that came from the same place that just slept with her minutes before.
She looked surprised but not displeased by the thought of someone she knew knowing a guy in a fairly popular band.
"So...is there any way you could help me with that?"
Insane.
