Chapter 12: Big Girls Don’t Cry

After the affair with Theresa and the guys in the living room, Atlanta had to get away to her own room. The Brownstone had become more of a War zone than school so far. She fell down onto her bed as tears rolled down her face. She turned to face her bedside table and her eyes laid upon the picture of her and Archie at the big soccer game three months ago. Atlanta’s team had won but Archie’s had tied one to one. She, since the guys didn’t want to ‘oppose’, and Archie had gone out to the movies. They had seen and action comedy with Bruce Willis starring. She reached for her MP3 player beside the photograph and set the earphone in her ears; static. She guessed Theresa must be mad because whenever she is, the radio and TV transmissions get really bad.

‘Da Da Da Da,’ she hummed. Since there was no real music to go around now, she might as well make some.
‘The smell of your skin lingers on me now
You’re probably on your flight back to your home town,’ she could just imagine Archie walking out of the house.
‘I need some shelter of my own protection baby
To be with myself instead of calamity
Peace, Serenity.

‘God I need to get my own place,’ she ran her fingers through her vibrant hair.

‘I hope you know, I hope you know
That this has nothing to do with you
It's personal, Myself and I,’ she brought her knees up to her chest, then straightened them out on the bed.
‘We've got some straightenin' out to do
And I'm gonna miss you like a child misses their blanket
But Ive got to get a move on with my life
Its time to be a big girl now
And big girls don't cry
Don't cry
Don't cry
Don't cry,’

Atlanta swung her legs out of bed and walked around to the small mirror by the table, unaware that someone was watching…

‘The path that I'm walking
I must go alone
I must take the baby steps until I'm full grown
Fairytales don't always have a happy ending, do they
And I foresee the dark ahead if I stay,

‘I hope you know, I hope you know
That this has nothing to with you
It's personal, Myself and I
We've got some straightenin' out to do
And I'm gonna miss you like a child misses their blanket
But I've got to get a move on with my life
Its time to be a big girl now
And big girls don't cry,’

Archie opened the door slightly and saw Atlanta and for the first time in her entire life, she was smiling, yet it was a bittersweet smile, and then he saw her eyes were wet.

‘Like the little school mate in the school yard
We'll play jacks and uno cards
Ill be your best friend and you'll be mine
Valentine
Yes you can hold my hand if u want to
Cause I want to hold yours too
Well be playmates and lovers and share our secret worlds
But its time for me to go home
Its getting late, dark outside
I need to be with myself instead of calamity
Peace, Serenity,’

‘I hope you know, I hope you know
That this has nothing to do with you,’ she picked up the picture of her and Archie and smiled sweetly.
‘It's personal, Myself and I
We've got some straightenin' out to do
And I'm gonna miss you like a child misses their blanket,’ she set the picture down and lay down on the bed, pulling the covers over her. She didn’t feel lik eating, she knew it would come back up again if she saw is face moving.
‘But I've got to get a move on with my life
Its time to be a big girl now
And big girls don't cry
Don't cry
Don't cry
Don't cry,’

Atlanta reached beside her and picked up the red apple she placed hours before right before school had started. She rubbed it and took a bite.

‘La Da Da Da Da Da.’
