When Pete hung up the phone, he first tried to calm himself down. Maybe it wasn't as bad as he had thought. Maybe she had just decided to go out for a walk, and were going to come back home a bit later. Or maybe, she had decided to go look for a job without him. That was a nice thought, but for all he knew, she could be going back to her old boyfriends house to stay with him for good. That was possibly one of the worst senarios he could think of.
Not knowing what to do, he then realized he would call her himself. After all, she did have a cell phone and carried it with her most of the time. If she picked up, he would know everyting was okay. He didn't want to think otherwise.
He dialed her number and waited for it to ring.... He tapped his foot anxiously on the floor, waiting for her to pick up and tell him that everything was alright. His heart dropped when she never answered. He waited for the answering machine to beep so he could leave a message.
"Hey Kate, it's Pete. I don't know where you went, or where you are. Could you call me when you get this? Ok bye."
He hung up and slammed his head against the back of his seat. Why couldn't he just leave her? Just forget about her. Things would be easier that way; possibly for the both of them. No matter how many tears it took, or hearts broken, he couldn't bring himself to do it. No matter how drasticly she had changed, he still loved her. He wasn't one to admit it, but he knew deep down he did. It was an undying love. Nothing could change that. Not even when she let him down and cheated on him. It didn't make a difference. She was the first, and only person he had ever truly loved.
As he started the car, his heart began beating faster than before. Not knowing where she was, worried him more than anything else. Hopefully, there wasn't anything to be worried about.
He drove down the street and came around his first corner. He was going to search through the entire town if he had to. The next street that he passed was blocked off by the dozens of police cars and ambulences.
His heart stopped. Pete jumped out of his car and ran towards the police cars. There were a bunch of police officers all walking around asking people questions. There was yellow police tape surounding an area of the road, and a bunch of people standing around. He neared the area and went underneath the police tape. A much taller man stopped him.
"Sir, you can't come in here." He said sternly
"What's going on?" Pete asked.
"There was a shooting here just a few moments ago." The man said, trying to give out as little information as possible.
"What? Did anyone get hurt?"
"Yes. One gentleman and one woman. I'm afraid your going to have to leave now sir." The man said as he pushed Pete towards the exit.
Pete glanced around the neighborhood. He then realized he had been here before. This was where him and Kate went the other day to get her stuff. This was where her old boyfriend lived.
"Wait a second. What was the girls name?" He asked before being pushed further.
"I'm sorry but thats private and we are not allowed to give you that information."
"Wait! I think i might know them!" He yelled.
The officer stopped. "Ok, come with me."
Pete followed him to the crime scene. There was a man in handcuffs being put into a police car. The man was Kate's ex-boyfriend.
"I know him!" Pete pointed to the police car.
The police man turned around. "Are you his friend?"
Pete shook his head. "Hell no; but we know eachother. Why are they taking him away?"
"There are many reasons. I cannot tell you all of them, but apparently he was in the drug dealing business. That's why those men broke into his house. I guess they were coming for drugs, but things soon turned ugly and one of the men pulled out a gun and shot at him and his friend."
Pete looked wide-eyed. "Wait, who is his friend? Is his friend a girl?"
The man nodded. "Follow me."
Pete continued following the police officer to a large ambulence. Its lights were flashing and a couple of paramedics were all standing around a woman who was sitting in the back of the vehicle. It was her.
