Ryan’s POV
“Drive!” I shouted as loud as I could over my three companions in the rented SUV.
“Chill, Ryan. We’ll be there before you know it.” I knew he was trying to help, but something about the way Spencer had spoken to me just then brought back that familiarly frustrated feeling. It always came back whenever we were talking about Amanda, making it evident that he still had some kind of problem with it. Apparently, I put off talking to him about it longer that I had thought.
“Well it wouldn’t hurt to go a little faster,” I said under my breath as I stared out the window into the streets of New York City.
“You know what? He’s right,” Brendon chimed in. I whirled my head around to see the expected look of anticipation on his face like he couldn’t wait to finally see the girl he had teased me about. But HE could wait. I was the one who was overly anxious to see her again. To hold her in my arms. To whisper sweet nothings into her ear. To kiss her like tomorrow would never come.
“Can we hurry up PLEASE?!”
Spencer sent Jon a look. As soon as he received it and caught on, he replied. “It’s just a few more minutes, Ryan,” he assured with a confident nod, staring out at the street from the driver’s seat all the while.
I turned away as if nothing had happened. My eye beheld the airport from a short distance.
“We’re here! Stop the car!” It briefly halted as I had commanded, and I sprung out, sprinting full on toward the building as fast as my legs would carry me. I kept my head down once I knew where I was going, to avoid any fans of ours who might have been there and recognized me. I prayed that they would leave me alone long enough for me to get Amanda out and head off to the place that we would be performing.
My eyes darted around, ready to get her out hastily once I spotted her. I felt my fingers twitching as I looked for a girl who looked anything like her. There were too many people in the terminal to get my eyes on the right one. After about five minutes of weaving my way around the people with open and aware eyes, I decided to just sit down and call her to find out where she was. I was a bit suspicious of people congregating in groups everywhere I went, whispering behind my back. I needed to get out.
Once I sat myself down in one of the many chairs in all of those rows of seats in the large room, I brought out my sidekick and played around with the buttons for a few seconds before holding it close to my mouth so that she could hear me when she picked up. It wasn’t even an instant after I heard the ringing before I heard another noise that was all too familiar to my ears. I immediately recognized the words as my own.
“Have some composure
Where is your posture?
Oh, no, no!”
I looked up with wide eyes again straight ahead of me, as that was where I heard the song coming from. It must have been form the girl who was sitting in the seat directly across from mine who had jumped as the ringing began. Her hands were moving frantically around, obviously searching for her phone. As soon as she had it, she picked up and spoke.
“Hello?” she said groggily, not even bothering to open her eyes and see that I was sitting right there. I had to restrain myself from jumping out of my seat and hugging her. Instead, I put my own words into the sidekick.
“Open your eyes.” She obeyed, the deep pools of brown widening just as mine had. Almost as if we were queued to do so, both of us dropped our devices at the same moment and leapt out of our seats to meet, our arms around each other, spinning around in the rapture of it all.
Amanda’s POV
He was so right. As we spun around like we were there in that moment my feet almost leaving the floor a few times, it seemed as if nothing at all had happened. He was close to me once again, and I was safe in his arms, just like I wanted to be forever. “Ryan…” I said as the movements slowed and we just stood there, facing one another, as close as we could have been, just like when we were standing outside of the tour bus. Only that time it was better. We had a whole night ahead of us. He didn’t have to go away from me anymore. I didn’t ever want him to.
He had been gazing at me with a half smile on his handsome features. It was a surprise to me just to be in his presence again, but under the condition that he was smiling at me with a twinkle in his eye, I was nearly breathless. For about a minute, we just stood there, staring. It was almost as if both of us doubted that the other was even there. We were too stunned to do anything else other than take in the other person and get used to that feeling like everything was right with the world.
I had never been so happy to be wrong. I thought that it would seem like so much more time had passed since we were together like that again. But it didn’t. I thought that I would constantly remember that horrid memory of the argument with my mom. But I didn’t. All the noise and all the people were gone, and Ryan was my world.
It must have been a good three minutes that we both were just standing there, just enjoying the fact that we were with one another again. I honestly thought it was going to last forever. He finally spoke, though, as I couldn’t find the right words to express the wonderful feelings that had come over me.
“We should go.” I nodded with my breath taken mood still in tact. The rest of the world came spinning back to me, bringing all of the voices of the people who were congregating around us to my ears. He eyed them cautiously before looking back to me with the same apprehension and grabbing my head to lead me out of the building after we both picked up our gadgets that we had abandoned in our chairs. I followed without a sound. Into that same winter air we both went into, running toward the vehicle when we go there. We laughed as we ran, holding hands the entire way. I tried my best not to stumble because I was gasping for air between my laughter, staring at him all the while.
And suddenly I found myself opening the door to see the rest of them – Panic! At the Disco. It wasn’t just the lyricist and guitarist anymore. It was all of them – Brendon, Spencer, Jon, as well as Ryan. I couldn’t help but let my shyness take over at the three new strangers. But I flashed an amiable smile at them all the same as the door was opened and all three stared at me. They each had their own expressions at first, but after that first moment of impact, they seemed to force the same smile back at me.
“Let’s get in the back,” Ryan mumbled before quickly taking one of the window seats and looking at me expectantly. I followed after I addressed Brendon, Spencer, and Jon with the same timid greeting. I got my own vibes from each of them individually. The first one I noticed was Brendon, whom I thought had the grin he was giving me stuck on his face or something. His eyes were wide and sparkling with excitement, like any moment he was going to burst. Jon simply returned my friendly smile as if to accept my presence but not be overwhelmed by it. Spencer just seemed to match Jon’s expression like he was indifferent about me.
I sat right next to Ryan, leaving room in the very last seat next to me and the window on the other side in plain sight. It was empty, at least, until Brendon moved to the back and held out a hand to me.
“Hey Amanda! I’m Brendon.”
As if I didn’t already know that. But it was a bit awkward for me to shake his hand and plaster another smile on my face. It was like he was the fan and I was the rock star.
“Nice to meet you Brendon,” I said as I shook it rather lazily compared to his jerky hand movement. He took a deep breath, obviously to say something else, but Ryan suddenly sprung back to life, cutting him off before he could get it out. I instantly dropped Brendon’s hand at the sound of Ryan’s voice.
“Yeah, that’s Brenny Bear,” he said as he looked at Brendon with a playful smile. “And up there’s Jon.” Jon smiled and nodded. “And Spencer.” Spencer put on the exact same smile in repetition when he looked back at us again before replacing it when a questioning expression when he noticed that Brendon had moved. With a small shrug, he turned back around to stare out the front window.
Jon put the car in gear and drove off. Meanwhile, I faced Brendon again and smiled. “Is that your nickname? Brenny Bear?” I said through my giggles.
“Only when people use it,” he answered, letting out a laugh of his own. “But I like Bden.”
“That’s clever! I wish I had a nickname like that.”
“Yours would be Ada.”
“I don’t know about that Brendon.” Ryan came in yet again, forcing me to turn my head in the opposite direction. “I like Amanda.” He smiled at me.
“But Ada’s the same pattern as mine. Only, she has more syllables and fewer letters.”
“I think you both mean my name.”
And we continued on like that as we headed across the gigantic city. It was nice to know that I was accepted by at least two of them. Jon and Spencer never talked much during the whole thing. With that in the back of my head, it kept me in tune with reality, that I was somewhat out of place sitting between a 20 year old man and another that was about to be the same age. It never bothered me enough to distract me from the whole conversation.
All seemed to be going well at my first meeting with the world-renowned band.
“Drive!” I shouted as loud as I could over my three companions in the rented SUV.
