Casey sat at her table in her kitchen, the tabloid under her messenger bag, as she waited for Pete. He had called her earlier and said they needed to talk, and she nodded, saying “Yeah” even though in her mind she was thinking, You’re right... We do... She sighed and laid her head on the messenger bag before Jasper jumped up on the table and rubbed his head against hers, purring. She lifted head and looked at the Hemingway cat, who stared at her with his golden-green eyes, his tail swaying in a curve. She brought her hand up and ran it down his back before he moved forward and licked her forehead. She smiled as he jumped off of the table, but her smile faded as the door opened, and she knew who it was.

Pete shut the door behind himself as he walked in, leaning down to greet Jasper with a small scratch behind the ear before he stood and went into the kitchen. “Hey,” he said as he leaned down and kissed the top of her head, before sitting across from her at the table.

Casey looked up at his uneasy face, which became a face of guilt and concern when he saw the tear streaked face and bloodshot eyes. “Hey.” She pushed the thought of the tabloid from her mind as she looked at Jasper who had jumped back on the table, only to jump on the refrigerator. She looked at Pete who gave a small smile, obviously about Jasper, and looked at her. “Um... I have something I want to talk about, but I want you to talk first Pete.”

Pete looked confused for a minute, but figured it was about the potential pregnancy and nodded in agreement. “Okay, um, Casey...” He rubbed the back of his head and then his neck as his eyes dropped to the top of her messenger back, which she was resting an arm across, and looked up at her face. “I don’t really know where to start here, but I have so much to say. I mean, there’s stuff with the record company and Public Relations, the fact that we didn’t use protection...” He trailed off before he sighed and looked down at the table.

“Start with the record company, Pete, because I’m sure it’ll be shorter than our talk about what’s going to happen if I do end up pregnant,” Casey said softly as she locked eyes with him when he lifted his gaze from the table.

Pete nodded and sighed again, folding his hands on the table. “Now, there are two things, one is about you... And the other one is the PR, but it’s through the record company.” Pete tried to swallow, but found himself having trouble. His body was trying to clam up, but he couldn’t let it. This talk had to happen, even if he could lose her over it. “Can I go ahead and get a quick drink?”

Casey got up and took a bottle of water from the fridge, handing it to him as she sat back down in her spot, watching him as he drank from the water. “Take your time hon,” she said as she sat back in her chair.

Pete closed the bottle and set it down. “Casey, the record company found out that you might exist, but it was after Public Relations said I needed to be seen with a girl in public since there was too much speculation that I’m gay. Apparently that was bad for sales, which is bullshit since the fans would cum in their fucking pants if I grabbed Patrick’s face and made out with him on stage.”

“So... What exactly are you saying here Pete?” Casey asked. “I want to make sure what I’m thinking is on the right track.”

“Casey, before I got with you, I agreed to do a PR scene... As far as the people know, I’m dating someone, and it’s not you,” Pete said, and when Casey shifted her gaze to the messenger bag, he frowned. “I’m not dating anyone else though Casey, I’m only dating you.”

“So, why not ‘break up’ with her?” Casey asked softly, staring at the messenger bag.

“I’ve tried running it through PR, but now with the record company finding out you might exist, they want to bring you out into the open. I don’t want them to though because I respect your decision to stay out of the spotlight.”

“Pete, did you talk to anyone before you came over here?”

“I was visiting the guys, but that’s it... Why?” Pete frowned when she lifted her messenger bag, revealing an open tabloid underneath. He looked up at her before looking to the tabloid, which showed the article the record company had shown him.

On one side, were three pictures of him and Ashlee Simpson, holding hands when he was “with” her before he met Casey. It went on and on about how they went far back, him and Ashlee, and how the were the power couple. The other side was question who the girl was that was with him in his Ferrari. Unfortunately, he recognized the picture as being from the day he took her over to his parents’ home when she had been invited for a second family dinner. It was taken from somewhere nearby when they were looking at each other, smiling, when they were stuck at a red light.

Pete lifted his gaze to Casey’s face, only to find her looking down at the tabloid with an unreadable expression. “Where did you get this?”

“Dolly found it,” she whispered. “She reads that crap and she gave it to me when I went to go see her this morning. She thought you were cheating on me.”

“You believe me that I’m not though, don’t you?” Pete asked, his chest getting tight at the thought that she didn’t trust him not to do that. When she nodded, his chest relaxed and he sighed with relief. “Thank you.”

“I know you wouldn’t cheat on me Pete, but I needed to hear it from you. If you didn’t bring this up in your talk I was going to bring it up... But this was all I really had to talk to you about besides the possibility I’m pregnant.” Casey sighed and put her elbows on the table, resting her head in her hands. “I could handle the PR, you fake dating, Pete, but me, my face being in the tabloids. This trash goes everywhere.”

Pete frowned, feeling guilty that she had been pushed out into the open like this. “Look, there are no other pictures Casey, at least none we know of, right?” When she looked up at him and nodded, looking vulnerable and slightly scared, he reached over and took her hand in his. “If you want, the next time some interviewers brings it up, I’ll say I was just hanging out with you. You’re a friend of the family or you’re some type of family member for one of the guys. We can still fix this for you baby.”

Casey looked into his eyes as he gave her hand a small squeeze of reassurance. “I don’t know Pete. I want to stay out of the spotlight, but what happens if I do end up pregnant and when I start showing, these buzzards get more pictures?”

Pete frowned, realizing she was right. “Its just a reminded that we can’t hide forever, isn’t it?” When she nodded, he sighed. He squeezed her hand again and rubbed his thumb over her knuckles. “This one is up to you Casey... I know and understand why you want to stay out of the spot light, and although you’re heading into it, we can still pull you back out of it.”

“For now, until we find out, I think we should wait... Pull me out for now, and if I am pregnant, then we make the decision from there whether or not to go public, on our own rather than because of the buzzards.” Casey frowned and looked at their hands, still together. “Is this why you freaked out so bad about us not using protection?” She asked, keeping her gaze down, not able to look up at him.

Pete brought her hand to his face, kissing it softly before resting it back down on the table. “I panicked Casey,” he said softly. “I panicked because of this, because I don’t know if we’re ready for it, just... It’s a shock and instead of me becoming numb from it, it sent me into a panic attack. And now, we need to decide what’s going to happen if you are pregnant. I mean, what’s going to happen to us?”

Casey looked up at him to see the mixed emotions on his face, fear, confusion, and sadness. “Pete... I told Dolly, but only because I knew she might be able to help. She helps me out with everything and she might have known what to do about this, and she sort of did.” When Pete nodded for her to go on, she grabbed his water and took a sip of it, much to his slight amusement. “She told me of a couple of pregnancy tests that give pretty accurate and quick results, so we could find out, rather than waiting for a missed period.”

“And if it turns out being wrong, we think you’re not, and then you end up being pregnant?” He asked quietly.

“If I’m pregnant Pete, no matter when it happens, I’m keeping it,” she answered, looking down. “I could never kill anything or anyone... And I’ve seen how some adopted people turn out, and I just couldn’t do that to a possible baby.

Pete got up and brought her to her feet, sliding his arms around her waist as he hugged her tight, burying his face in her hair. He felt relief when she put her arms around him, her head resting against his chest. “I love you Casey, I meant it when I said it, and pregnant or not, I’m not leaving you. If you are pregnant, I don’t want it to end us.”

“Can you handle it if I end up being pregnant?” She whispered.

“I won’t lie Casey, I’ll be afraid at first, I won’t now how to take it at first if you are, but I love you, and I’ll need you to deal my stupidity and stubbornness.”

“Only if you put up with my mood swings and morning sickness,” she said with a small smile, which grew a little when Pete chuckled against her hair and murmured in agreement.
