Chapter five
As soon as he pulled over I jumped out of the car and pulled out my beloved cancer stick. The nicotine warmed my frozen body almost to the point where I could feel my fingers again. Joe watched me intently as I breathed in my toxic paradise. I captured his eyes with mine. The chocolate orbs never breaking contact with mine. They remained locked until I grinded the cigarette under my foot. My eyes shifted back to the car as I opened the door. Soon we were back on the open road with no real destination.
"Da.mn!" I yelled suddenly startling Joe.
"What?" He asked momentarily taking his eyes off the road to look at me.
"Nothing you should worry your pretty little head about." I told him taking out my cell phone and quickly dialing the number not even amnesia could erase from my mind.
"Ryan?!?!?!" Brendon's panicked voice filled my ear making me flinch.
"Yeah it's me." I said quietly.
"Are you okay? Did something happen? Where are you?" He asked breathing heavily.
"Yes, no, and I'm not entirely sure." I told him answering his questions.
"Are you coming back?" He asked calming down.
"I don't think so." I answered in almost a whisper.
"Ry, you know we love you and want you to come home. Please why can't you just-"
"I've made up my mind Bren." I interrupted him.
"Fine. The guys want to talk to you." He said sadly almost making me feel bad. That is if Ryan Ross could feel.
"Hey Bren," Jon greeted. "Why are you doing this? Why do you have to leave? Who the hell do you think you are? You just can't leave like that! What is wrong with you?"
"Because I can, because I have too, Ryan Ross, yes I can and a lot of things." I answered smugly.
"Nobody likes a smart ass Bren." He told her sternly. "Spence wants to talk to you. Late Bren."
"Ryan?" Spencer's meek voice replaced Jon's stern one.
"Hey Spence." I almost smiled but that would go back to the emotion thing.
"Please be safe Ry, you're like a brother to me. I would be crushed if something bad happened to you." For some reason hearing Spencer say that made my heart break in ways I didn’t know possible.
"I promise I will, my battery is about to die, love ya Spence." I told him with 100% honesty.
"Love you too Ry." He whispered before I hung up the phone. And for the first time in years, in the car of an almost complete stranger, I George Ryan Ross cried.
