Casey groaned as she stood up from her bed, holding her head which was throbbing terribly. She noticed Pete and Irene weren’t in the room, and as she ventured out into the living room she noticed they weren’t there either. She frowned as she grabbed her Excedrin bottle off of the counter in the kitchen as she made her way in there, wishing for the headache to be gone. Downing the pills with a glass of water, Casey sighed and looked out the glass door, watching the leaves on the trees dance in the blowing wind. Her pounding head had laid a fog over her thought process and it slightly irritated her, but she was too tired to get riled.
When she saw a piece of paper taped to the cup cabinet she wondered to herself how she had missed it before she grabbed the note and looked at it, smiling slightly as she read over it.
casey,
your gram wanted to ride in the rental,
something about red convertibles? so
we shouldn’t be gone long, but call if
you need anything while we’re out.
i love you.
xo
Casey smiled a little more as she set the note down and made her way to the bathroom, feeling the sudden urge to take a shower.

Pete smiled as he looked over at Irene, who was enjoying the feeling of the wind in her hair and face as he sped the little red convertible down the highway. She had mentioned to him that she had always wanted to own one like it and he had quickly jumped to offer to take her for a ride, which she had just as quickly jumped to take him up on the offer. But there had been one request, that she direct him to a store, for something he needed to get.
“Thank you for the ride Peter!” Irene yelled over the wind.
Pete smiled, normally hating it when people called him Peter, but he let Irene do it since she had been there for Casey for all of those horrible years. “No need to thank me,” he yelled back. “Just thank me by telling me which exit I need to get off on.”
Irene looked at the upcoming sign and shook her head. “It’s the next exit, but you’re going to follow the road for a while before we get there.”
Pete nodded to show he understood, and kept driving, going around a guy who was actually doing the speed limit, making Irene laugh. Pete smiled to himself, glad that Casey had taken after this woman, rather than the horrible woman who had claimed raising his girlfriend.
“Peter?”
“Yes ma’am?”
Irene looked over at Pete, a curious look on her face. “Could you tell me why you love Casey? I understand how anyone could, but I want to know why you do.”
Pete stared ahead at the highway and cars for a moment, trying to put it all into words. “Casey is the first person I’ve been with that I have found myself able to fully trust... I had to go out to California for a little while and anytime I leave anyone behind I worry they’re cheating on me. But with Casey, the only thing I was worried about was that she was over-working herself at her job... We have this...bond... It’s unlike anything I’ve ever felt with anyone before. She is so /real/, and she’s /herself/. Casey is Casey, not some person claiming to be her. She has her head on her shoulders, she has her mind in the right place. She can handle her own and handle the people around her. I love Casey and she loves me, and that’s all I know anymore,” he said the last part with a smile. “And she’s just so caring, a loving... And sweet. And my God, she’s so gorgeous just being herself.”
Irene smiled as she listened to Pete’s words, glad that someone finally viewed her granddaughter in such a way. It warmed her heart to hear someone cared so much about Casey. She looked to the road when they pulled off of the highway and Pete came to a stop at the red light of the off ramp.

In her spot, curled up on the living room couch, Casey sighed as she sipped the drink she made herself. Her hair was drying, but it was still a bit damp since she didn’t like using blow dryers on her hair. She grabbed her phone from beside her leg when it went off. She smiled big when she saw “Pattycakes” flashing on the screen. “Hey sweetie,” she said into the phone when she answered it.
“Hey Cas, how’s it going?” Patrick chirped into the phone, happy she had answered and he could hear the smile in her voice. “Is everything worked out?”
“Yeah, Pete and I are good again,” Casey said, her smile becoming bigger. “How are you and Jewseph doing?”
Patrick laughed when he heard the nickname and relayed to Joe who merely groan and apparently pouted because of Patrick’s ‘aww baby, don’t pout’ before he came back, chuckling. “We’re doing good. But now I’m going to have to cheer up the pouty Jew,” he giggled.
Casey laughed when Patrick shrieked and a new voice took over the phone. “Hey Casey.”
“Hey Joe,” she giggled. “What did you do to Patrick?”
Joe chuckled and grunted slightly. “I tackled him to the couch and now I’m trying to keep him pinned. So, are you and Pete okay now?”
Casey smiled, shaking her head at the feminine screech from Patrick on the other side. “Yes, we’re fine. You two behave now, and call me when you’re done assaulting your lover boy.”
“Alright Casey,” Joe laughed, and then yelped before Patrick came back on the phone, panting softly, but managing to giggle softly. “Hey Casey, you going?”
“Yeah, I’m going to let you guys go so you can have your, whatever it is,” she giggled. “Plus I think Pete just got back with my gram, so I’ll talk to you and your boy later.”
“Alright Casey,” he giggled, laughing for a moment. “Love you sweetie.”
“Love you too Tricky,” she said before she hung up and smiled up at Pete and Irene when they walked through the door, both smiling.
