Casey’s hand trembled slightly as she tried to make herself eat. Normally she would dig into her grandmother’s cooking, but tonight, it was different. Next to her, was Pete, and next to him was Jeffrey, next to Jeffrey was Mary, and between Mary and Casey, Irene sat. The five of them having a dinner together was so tense Casey couldn’t stand it, but she only had to last until Mary and Jeffrey left again, but the look Jeffrey kept sending her were rattling her to the bones every time.
“So, Peter, how long have you been with Casey now?” Jeffrey asked before sticking a piece of meat in his mouth, chewing with his mouth open.
Pete lightly brushed his leg against Casey’s as he looked up from his food to look at the man he wanted to throttle. “Just about to hit the nine month mark. Only three more months until our one year,” he answered. “And by the way, it’s Pete. Peter is the name of my father.”
Jeffrey chuckled. “Sorry about that. So, how did you two manage to meet?”
“I was after a book my sister was bugging me about, went in there, and she was called up to help me,” Pete answered and looked at Casey, winking at her, which made her manage a small smile, the first one all night. When they came home early in the morning, Irene had been up and about making her morning coffee. When her grandmother mentioned all five of them would be having dinner together, with a sad look on her face, Casey lost her smile she had walked in with. Seeing her smile was a bit of a relief for Pete. “I found reasons to keep going in after that and finally got the courage to ask her out.”
“You make it sound like I said yes right away,” Casey said, looking up at Pete, a small hint of humor showing in her eyes.
“You didn’t say yes to him right away?” Irene asked, looking over at her granddaughter. “But he seems so nice.”
Pete smiled and looked at Irene. “Thank you ma’am, but no, she didn’t. She turned me down several times until I finally talked her into giving me a chance for a week, and well, it’s been one long week,” Pete chuckled as Casey nudged his leg with her own.
Jeffrey chuckled. “She always did have a tendency of making people wait for her,” he said with a hint in his tone as to what he meant.
Casey tensed and snuck a glance at Pete whose eye had twitched when she glanced at him. His smile faltered even though he tried to hold it. She saw the muscle in his jaw flex and she pressed her leg against his, making him look at her. She gave him a pleading look and slightly shook her head, making him sigh and go back to eating.
“So, are you two living together?” Mary asked, oblivious to what had just occurred.
Casey shook her head. “No. He lives at his place and I live in an apartment.”
“Is it at least a decent apartment?”
Casey swallowed hard at the condescending tone and nodded. “I love my apartment-”
“Well at least he’s paying for you to live good if he won’t let you live with him,” Mary cut in.
“Actually ma’am, Casey is paying for it herself,” Pete spoke up, his tone tense as he looked at Mary, smiling, even though his anger was visible in his eyes. “And I would love to have a home with her, but she wants to remain supporting herself. She doesn’t even ask me to put gas in her car, or pay her rent. I would love to spend money on my girlfriend, but she it makes her unhappy when I ask about it and all that matters to me is her happiness. If paying her way makes her happy, then I’ll let her pay her way.”
Mary smirked slightly as she rested an elbow on the table, looking at Pete, and then to Casey. “I’m sure you let him pay for something/,” Mary said, her eyes darkening as she looked at her daughter. “How much are you charging him? I’m sure it’s a high price with him being /famous and all.”
Casey paled and Irene gasped at what Mary was insinuating. Pete was a different story. He calmly set his fork down and looked at Mary with a stone glare that made her confidence disappear. “Casey is my girlfriend, not my whore. And, our personal life is none of your business.”
“So she’s a free whore? I mean, she’d have be good at something to keep you with her.”
“Ma’am, I would appreciate it if you would quit talking about Casey like that.”
“Why? I’m only speaking how it is. Given her past, everyone should know what kind of whore she is.”
“Mary!” Irene gasped, making Pete look at the older woman. He heard the muffled whimper to his left and looked over at Casey to see the tears in her eyes.
He didn’t acknowledge anything Mary and Irene said to each other as he got up with Casey and followed her quick steps out of the house and onto the porch. Pete pulled Casey into his arms and let her bury her face in his chest as she clung to him, sobbing into his chest. Her sobs tore at him as he fought the urge to go back in there and hurt the woman who hurt his girlfriend. He buried his face in her hair and rubbed her back as she cried her pain into his chest, soaking his shirt. He frowned when he heard the yelling inside, and she pressed as close to him as she could, obviously hearing it too.
After a few moments, Casey pulled back and looked up at him, sniffling. “Do you have your car keys?” When he nodded, she wiped her eyes. “Can we get out of here?”
