Holding the knife blade down I crept around the side of the house, listening for any sign of the person who was screaming, now that there was no noise. But I suddenly saw it, an Edindal demon, a cross between an incubus/succubus and a wood chipper. It was not the creature from my nightmares, but something more sinister. It’s hard to describe this abomination. Picture something seven feet tall that crawls and slithers, glides and creeps, seeming to do all at the same time and just looking at will make your skin visibly crawl. I felt my blood chill as I looked at what it was kneeling over. Gerard. With out moving I tried to asses what kind of damage it had done to him. There were several gashes a crossed his chest and legs, furthermore he was bleeding quite a bit. I was gathering all my courage to rush over and get the thing away from him, but I was frozen with fear. Yes, I might have some nefarious beastie locked in my basement, but I wasn’t the one who stuck it there, my great-great grandmother did. This thing scared the ever loving shit out of me, if I had had anything in my bladder I would have lost it. While I was rooted to the spot I could only watch as it, sorry she placed one of her deathly white hands against Gerard cheek, lightly caressing his smooth skin, her black claws flashing in the moonlight. Slowly it lowered its face above his, sniffing along his jaw line before she ran its cochineal red tongue a crossed his skin, licking at the blood welling from the cuts it had made upon his cheek. She began emitting a purring noise as she pressed her cheek against his, her hand that had rested against his face now moved lazily down his chest, her fingers wiggling slightly as her hand trailed down to his waist, moving slowly as she brushed over his member through the black slacks he wore.

And that was my breaking point. My fear evaporated and I rushed toward the malicious beast. I would love to tell you it was an epic battle of good vs. evil, but it wouldn’t be true, I was lucky. It was distracted with its lust for Gerard and I moved up behind it and slit its throat. It was a cowardly thing to do, but I am, in essence, a coward. One fortunate thing about this type of demon, no clean up. It just dissolved into dust and blew away, along with the knife. Waving a hand in the air I coughed as I moved over to Gerard and tapped him on his uncut cheek, calling his name, only to hear it echo in a masculine voice. I threw up an arm to protect my eyes as I was nearly blinded by Bob’s flashlight. “He’s over here! I need help; he’s cut up pretty bad!” What I didn’t want to think about was that the Edindal traveled in pairs, and got really pissed when you killed their mate. With Bob’s help we got him inside and to his room. Running to get Bobbi from the dinning room, I told her to get her medical kit from her room. After she left I was bombarded with so many variations on, “who was it? Are they okay?” that my head was near to exploding. What was I supposed to tell them, the truth? Oh yes, I can just see that, ‘I’m so sorry but a crazed, sadistic, sex starved demon cut up your friend and then tried to molest him.’ Yeah… that would go over well. So I just made something up.

“Mountain lion, Gerard was attacked by a mountain lion.” I blurted out the first thing I thought of; well second, the first was an alligator. I felt not an ounce of regret for lying. After having to lie most of my life to friends and clients about the strange happenings around me and my home, I was a master of deception. Besides even if I told them the truth I couldn’t prove it. With most demons only people with ‘the sight’ can see them, which is why I was given the keys and not my older sister. Bobbi wouldn’t have seen the creature that had attacked Gerard, not even if it began slashing and tearing her apart. Only Master demons can make people with no second sight see them.

“A mountain lion?” spat Mikey, grinding the words out from between his clenched teeth. “We’re in fucking Michigan!” he spat. I understood that he was worried about his brother, that’s why I didn’t yell at him for the tone he used with me.

Placing a hand on my heart I looked at him. “If I’m lying may God,” whom I never believed in. “strike me dead.” it was an empty oath, even spoken fiercely, it was still empty. However it seemed to calm him a bit. “Look,” I leaned against the table, my energy level going down, and the adrenaline wearing off. “Bobbi and I are going to patch him up the best we can, and get a real Doctor to come out in the morning. The best thing we can do is let him rest. ‘K?” At all there nods and a few mumbles I went to find my sister, covertly sneaking a carving knife off the table and up the sleeve of my hoodie. Running up the main staircase I found her outside her door with a large first aid kit. Getting to Gerard’s room I pushed open the door. “I’ve brought the doctor.” I said as we entered, expecting to find Bob, but the room was empty of any conscious life. As Bobbi checked the ‘patient’ I checked the room for any sign of Bob then shut the door and sat on the other side of his bed, helping my sister pull the tattered, bloody remains of his shirt off and pants, leaving him in only his boxers. She was quick and efficient in how she patched him up, it didn‘t take but a half hour.

Looking down at him I sighed, somehow I felt his being attacked was my fault, which It so was not. Glancing at Bobbi while she packed up her things I spoke with bitter resentment. “It was a demon.” Her head rose quickly and she nearly dropped to the floor. “What kind?” she asked in a shaky voice. She had been warned about a few different demons, so she knew about a few different kinds, but not enough.

“The kind that torture, rape, then kill and eat their victims.” I watched her shutter, one because she hated the word ‘rape’ two because she was scared. “It could have killed anyone of us…” she whispered. “No, it couldn’t. These demons are only sent to attack a certain person. Him.” I pointed at Gerard, who now had his chest bandaged up and his legs. Throwing the blanket at the end of the bed over him I looked back at my sister. “I’m going to guard him for the rest of the night. “ I took in the skeptical look on her face. ”Just incase another one comes. He’ll need someone to protect him, and with me being the only one between us who can see the damned things, I have to.” I didn’t think I should tell her that I was certain another one would come, but not when. At her mute nod I crawled off my side of the bed and walked her to the door.

After she left I leaned my back against the door and sighed. This was just perfect, just wonderful. Pushing away from the door I made sure it and the windows were locked and looked at Gerard, pulling the knife slowly out of my sleeve. Moving over to the small loveseat that sat against the wall near his bathroom I curled up and drifted off to sleep. I may have been dreaming about the worlds largest cookie, but all my senses were on alert. that’s why I woke quickly when I heard movement come from Gerard’s bed.
