wouldn't the cogs be more like a NAS in a RAID formation? Geek speak. Nice story so far, I really enjoy the depth of emotion.Author's response
Yeah, you could say its like the parity blocks in a RAID-5 array, but the point here is that any fault-tolerant system is going to be redundancy based.
Glad you like the story - got a few more chapters in mind.

I think it was Robin Williams that said "I looked up redundant in the dictionary - it said "please see redundant.""Battered Hearts

Hmm, so the cogs are networked? Does that mean that if one wasn't wiped, it could control/operate through the others and extend its influenc?
That was an interesting chapter as live goes one and Harry & Hermione help Arthur and Molly recover from their devastation.
The final scene, where the cog takes over someone else should be interesting if he/it comes to Harry's place and attacks Hermione. Somehow I suspect Harry's got some extra, "non-standard", protections that may surprise this parasite.Author's response
Kind of a hive mentality with built in redundancy - of course the networking simile can also be exploited to fight them - or is that too cliche?
As far as Arthur and Molly, I wanted them healed.
The best way to recover from a deep personal loss is to focus on what you have, family, career, whatever moves you, whatever you're passionate about.
I think it's safe to say that when Harry figures out who the bad guys are there will be some interesting consequences.

Not an MCSE - I'm a Unix geek - but I did catch that reference. I thought it was pretty cool, myself.
This is a pretty interesting story so far.Author's response
Hey, I'm an equal opportunity Compuphile - Unix was the granddaddy of the Rebel Alliance - Linus Torvald's own Linux.
My certs are with the Evil Empire, but my networks are IPX/SPX compatible!

Very nice. The formation of the new, unwitting family plods along, and I just love the stupidity of the unspeakables. One Cog could levitate, but they're all blank slates? Yeah right. Fortunately, your Harry is brighter. Sleight of hand, incomprehensible to Mages? Brilliant. I do wholeheartedly agree with Harry on pregnant women. If women could be re-impregnated during gestation, I believe pregnancy would be more or less a permanent thing, also due to what i suspect will crop up later. Thanks.

If you're referring to the tendency that some pregnant women have to become hormonal and, well, NEEDY, than you're spot on!

Nice one...but your chapters are a bit short...so if can plz either increase the length or the frequency.
Liked the networking analogy... can't we simply infect one of the nodes with some virus to clean it all. After all i haven't understood the real need for these things...they are definitely creepy.
Is the effect gonna be like an Imperious curse, as in you have a voice which nudges you in a direction or is it going to be like a total take over of mind. Caz if it's an imperious there is a chance to fight it, and only the weak minded will fall for it.
Update soon.Author's response
Would you believe a little bit of both?

I haven't left you a review in a couple fo chapters because, well because I just didn't know what to say. After your little revelation about "Piss Day" I immediately thought of Victor and then immediately discarded it. You've crafted this story far too well to go with such an easy solution.
Bringing back those brains from canon was really well done, I can only assume it is Sasha's brain causing the troubles but that is just a stab in the dark and probably too easy an answer. Maybe it was Sasha's brain that 'died' after the fight? It's ability to levitate an indicator if it's magical origin. And maybe Igor's taken in it's stead after he was killed by the DEs? He could have become fixated on Hermione during GoF and his inherent sadism released even after his brain was wiiped. I'm assuming that even without memories traces of personality, which in part may be defined by genetics, still comes through. Hence the 'faulty' brains used in the experiment doom them to failure.
Really, really well done. You've crafted a mystery that I am truly enjoying and I can't wait to see where you take it since I can't even begin to guess where you are going with it.

BJH,
Again, you are scarily close to writing my outline for me. Not exactly but close enough. Now I'll have to look at my notes and make a change or three. . .

Well, the real question is whether the cogs access the _evil zone in AD DNS for referenceAuthor's response

A cognivore villain...very unique. I'm definitely getting more and more into this story. In spite of the serious tone of this story, I couldn't help but shudder a bit when whichever grand-Weasley said the kids looked just like Ron and Ginny...
Looking forward to more.Author's response
Thank you for reading. Remember the eldest Weasleys are suffering from the pain of grief - they see two sweet, affectionate children and remember what their own were like at that age.
I admit it, I turn to mush around beautiful children.
For the record, that's children, not babies. I agree with whoever it was that said babies all resemble Winston Churchill. . .
