I shivered, an iciness spreading across my limbs, forcing my eyes open sooner than I would have liked. I glanced to the window, anticipating the bitter breeze to be biting gently at the white plastic blinds, only to find them stagnant. Shivering, I glanced around the room for any other sort of disturbance, only to find the room shrouded in the expected darkness. Still, the hair on my arm seemed to tingle as if electrocuted, sending little jolts through my body, my eyes wide, piercing through the inky blackness that, in itself, seemed foreign and bizarre.

Staring once more around the room my ears caught a creaking, my eyes immediately snapping to the bedroom door; closed just as I remembered. The creaking sounded again; faint as if resounding throughout the entire house before it reached my ears.

Sliding off the side of the bed, I headed towards the door, grasping the cool brass between my fingers before gently pulling it open and beginning my trek through the small hallway to the staircase, lying like a dormant snake before me.

I could feel my feet gliding down the stairs, my mind unregistered to the fact that it had not ordered them to move, was, in fact, still asleep in the warm bed I had abandoned in curious stupidity that seemed to be perpetually attracted to me.

I looked into the empty kitchen, lit by the pale moonlight gleaming through the partially bare window, masking the linoleum and metal in an eerie blue light; it’s otherworldliness convincing me that this was all part of some dream and Frank’s gently shake would wake me, smiling down at me as he finally whispered the words I had been waiting the past year for. Shaking my head at the nonsense streaming across my brain like an old movie reel, I turned in a full circle, eager to find anything out of place.

Almost assured that I had imagined the sounds, my eyes caught sight of the basement door, a chill running down my spine as I stared in paralyzing shock – the door was open. My eyes flashed to the right and left through the semi-darkness, my feet pulling me towards the door, my brain screaming at me to sprint back to the bedroom and clamp my eyes shut until morning arrived. Without my consent, my hand once again caught the doorknob, pulling it open enough to fit my petite frame through.

There was a glowing light at the bottom of the stairs, my head still screaming at me to turn back, to stop incessant movement of my feet forwards. One, two, thirteen steps until the source of the glowing became clear. At once I recognized my mistaken flame as a man, clothed all in black, a stark contrast to his hair which I thought for a moment might have been the source of the light it was such a bright white.

“Are you an angel?” Finally having found my voice, my lips spoke the words before my brain could comprehend them, my eyes searching for the wings I expected to appear at any moment.

“No, but I am here to help you.” I swallowed hard, my throat seeming to constrict at his words as my brows furrowed in confusion. “Follow me Kaelin.”

As he stepped forwards, I followed unthinking, ambling behind the unnamed illumination as he led me forwards into the darkness.

Hours seemed to pass as we continued to walk, always forwards, never turning either right or left in the darkness, always wondering where he was leading me and why I was following. My thought abruptly turning to Frank, upstairs, alone, in bed; what would he think when he awoke to find me missing? Would he search for hours, days, weeks even for me, or would he simply concede that I had run away? Would he think that I hated him? My heart dropped at that idea and I found my feet stopping abruptly, my eyes lifting to meet those of my ‘rescuer’.

“Come Kaelin, it’s only a bit longer and then you’ll be free.” A peculiar feeling overcame me, my eyes catching the glint of silver on the floor beneath me as my knees immediately bent, my hand outstretching to retrieve it. I could feel the metal cooling my fingers like ice rubbed across hot skin, calm replacing fear, consuming me as I continued to stare into those unreadable eyes, blurred in the light surrounding him.

“I’m sorry.” A whispered acknowledgement before he lurched forwards, shock and pain etched across his features; sadness dripped into his eyes, turning them a soft caramel, visible even through the darkness.

Warmth seeped onto my skin, forcing my eyes down to my hands, still clutching what I recognized as a knife, lodged between ribs. My eyes darted back up, shock soaring through my veins as his blood continued to pour onto my hands, his eyes catching mine.

“Why Kaelin? I tried to save you…” I shook my head in confusion, fingers releasing the knife with a jerk, stumbling backwards away from the melted caramel locked onto my own cerulean.

White hands, stained with red reached out for me, seeming to lengthen before my eyes, reaching forwards until they grasped my shoulders, shaking me, caramel seeping into my soul as his blood stained my skin.

“Kaelin!” My head flopped from side to side as he continued to harshly shake my shoulders, my vision blurry as I struggled to seize those cruel fingers digging into bare skin.

“Kaelin! Wake up!” My body went limp beneath callused fingers as my eyes snapped open, meeting green instead of the caramel of seconds before, concern replacing the fear and sadness that had lain before me. I knew I was shaking as his arms wrapped around me, pulling me from the cold concrete for the second time in two days.

Shamelessly, I clung to his neck, taking in the tanned skin, a stark contrast to the white of the angel, the dark hair tickling my forehead as it burrowed into his neck a welcome divergence from the white of my murdered cherub.

A tremble flew through my body as he released his grasp, seating me on the mattress, tossing the blanket at me, which I selfishly wrapped around my still quaking shoulders.

“What the hell is going on Kaelin? That’s the second time!” A moment’s indecision passed over me, one half desperately wanting to tell him about the angel, the angel that I had killed, his blood staining my fingers and skin, while the other half wanted to close my eyes and never open them again. The glare of those green eyes told me that simply falling asleep would not assuage him right now. Taking a deep breath, I settled on a version close enough to the truth.

“I’m not sure…I think I may be sleepwalking.” Those perfect dark brows contracted in my direction.

“No shit Kael. Why do you keep ending up in the basement though?” A shrug of my shoulders seemed the only answer I was able to offer as I tried to delve deeper into the blanket. I caught the low growl he uttered, his mumbled reply of “I can’t protect you down there.” barely audible before he stormed out of the room, slamming the door shut behind him, leaving me alone in the darkness, a reality I realized with some alarm was recurring a lot as of late.
