Unlocking The Past

"Theresa! I'm so glad that you're okay! What happened?..." James' questions went on for a few minutes as he held his girlfriend in a tight embrace.

When she lost herself in her swirling thoughts and failed to answer him, James started to worry... again. He had a tendency to be overprotective of Theresa. To worry about her and blow things way out of proportion. That's why Theresa didn't know how to tell him... well everything.

She had a somewhat dark and scary past that she had hid from the world, from him. A past that she tried to run from. Now, she had to face it all again. She couldn't keep running anymore. She couldn't hide it and hide from it anymore. She had to face it head on... and her closest friends weren't there to help her through it all.

"Theresa? Theresa?" she faintly heard the calls from him. She was still lost in the haze that had become her mind.

"Doctor!" she faintly heard his loud cry for help as she sat there with a blank expression set on her face.

Her eyes were unfocused as she recalled every moment, every detail of her life. How she met the others, how she met Jay. 'Jay...' that name seemed so close to her heart but at the same time she didn't know who Jay was. Then it clicked. Her vision.

"Jay." she muttered, barely audible, but James had heard it.

"What?" James asked, cautiously walking over to her, as if she was some sort of horrible creature in a cage. A creature where if you got too close you'd lose your life.

Theresa suddenly felt light headed. Everything started to fade and become a light shade of grey, and then it vanished into utter darkness. The darkness that she knew was her past. Her past dragging her back in. Digging its claws into her form once more... and having no intention in letting go.

When she awoke it was dark- she guessed it was early in the morning. She was still in the hospital, still in that bed, in that soul destroying room. She looked around, noticing small details she had missed earlier. Everything seemed so much clearer now. Like she had been woken from a long dream... a dream she had let become her reality.

Theresa looked to the window and noticed the small beads of water that rolled down it, free in their own way. Those beads were accompanied by the soft, white flakes of snow falling carelessly. Yet, as she looked further, the sky was clear. She slid her legs over the side of the hospital bed and let her bare feet skim the cold marble floors.

She sat herself up and pushed herself off the bed. She took a few shaky steps towards the window and collapsed into a chair. She wasn't sure why, but she felt as though she had just finished a battle with Cronus. 'Cronus...' that name too held something for her. But she couldn't remember. Then all of that came rushing back too.

The dizzy feeling returned with all these memories. But this time she managed to stay conscious. When that feeling dissipated into the night air, she looked out the window. The stars twinkled above her so... majestically. Like... each of them wanted to out shine the others. Like... each wanted to stand out from the rest.

She recalled a night when she had looked up at these very stars with Jay. It was mere nights before they had said goodbye. She remembered every detail of that night as if it were moments ago. A small smile spread across her rose petal lips as she thought of him. The one who held her heart for so long. The soul object of her affection and frustration. The one man she truly loved.

At that thought she stopped. 'Love...' she used to know that feeling so well. She used to thrive on it, live for it. Now, she was just confused. She had loved Jay then but now... now she loved James. At least... she thought she did. A few tears slipped from her eyes and made their journey down her cheeks, falling to the ground and disappearing from existence.

It was then that Theresa noticed another presence was in the room with her. A familiar presence that also felt so... vague. So close yet... so far away.

"You're awake." the sweet voice drifted over to Theresa's ears as a few more tears made their way in and out of existence.

She had her back to him, but she knew that he was walking towards her. She felt herself being pulled into a soft hug.

"You've been crying." he pointed out the obvious, though to Theresa it was unnoticed.

She brushed her tears away with the back of her hand and smiled a sweet smile at him.

"Is everything okay?" he asked, his voice soft.

She nodded, "I was just... thinking." She looked back to the stars.

"How do you feel?" he asked, noticing a look of pain in her eyes. The pain that only came with a rough life. A rough life that had been hidden from the world for years.

"Confused." she replied softly, not wanting to lie to him anymore but not wanting him to know the truth either.

"About what?" he asked, his eyes trained on the sky.

Theresa turned to him and locked her gaze with his. She needed to tell him. She wanted to... but... she was afraid. What if he thought she was crazy? What if he left her? What if...

'Stop it!' a little voice in her head screamed.

'Stop what?' she asked this little voice she once knew so well.

'Stop with all the 'what ifs'. Just tell him.'

'I can't. He... he wouldn't understand.'

'You don't know that.'

'Yes I do. Who in their right mind would believe that seven teenagers were chosen to save the world from the demonic Greek God of Time?'

'You did.'

'...I don't want to lose anyone else..'

'What about yourself?'

'What do you mean?'

'You lost yourself over all these years. What about the old Theresa? The real Theresa? What would she do?'

"Theresa?" James pulled her out of her inner dispute.

She took a deep breath. "James... there's something you should know about me..." she trailed off waiting to see his response.

"What is it?" he wasn't sure whether to be scared or curious.

"I'm not who you think I am." she said.

"What do you mean? You're Theresa... my Theresa." he replied, resting his hands on hers.

She pulled her hands back to herself and looked at him. "I mean that... I've lied to you about... everything."

"Shhh. You're just tired. Rest now. We'll talk about this tomorrow." he said as he kissed her forehead and led her back to her bed.

'He's not going to believe me...' she thought sadly.

'He said that you'd talk about tomorrow. Just go to sleep.' her inner self retorted.

And Theresa did that. She fell asleep, her dreams pulling her through every memory she held. The thought of finally being able to tell James the truth was somewhat comforting. It eased her into sleep.

But the next day rolled around and James didn't mention anything. Theresa figured that he must've just forgotten. But, a few more days passed and he didn't bring it up. By the end of the week, the day that Theresa was released from hospital care, she had promised herself that he would find out. She needed to rid herself of this... this burden. This weight that had dropped back on her shoulders after five years. Five... long years that seemed to pass in the blink of an eye.

She watched the snow fall from the warmth of James' car. The ride had been silent, as had most of the week been. She sighed as she thought of how to tell him. There was no more putting this off. She wasn't going to run from it anymore. She wouldn't let it win. She wouldn't let fear- her fear- get the best of her again. She couldn't live with that.

"Theresa. We're here." she barely heard his voice as she realized the car had stopped moving.

She came out of her daze and looked out the window- they were home. 'Home...' that just didn't sound right anymore. This wasn't home... at least not her home. Her home was back in New Olympia. Back with the others. Back with herself.

She absentmindedly got out of the car and walked to the house. The door loomed above her and the cold look of it all sent a chill down her spine. This just didn't feel right. None of it did anymore.

She opened the door and went to the living room. She sat on a chair that was set by the window. The beige chair had been set there so she could watch the sun go down. Now, she sat there watching the stars and falling snow. She heard the door click shut behind her and footsteps travel from the front door into that room.

"Are you okay?" he asked, sighing.

"I don't know." she whispered, talking more to herself than anything.

"Theresa... what's going on?" he asked, taking a seat on another beige chair by the window.

She turned to him, eyes locking with his. "Do you..... Have you.... You.... you said that you wanted to know the real me, right?" This was going to be hard.

"Of course. Why do you ask?" he replied.

"Well.... then there's something I have to tell you."

"What is it?"

"When I told you about my past and where I came from..... I wasn't completely honest." she began slowly, trying to say everything in the right order.

"Well. What exactly wasn't true?" he asked.

"Well.... a few years ago I was taken to New Olympia and... well I met six others that were taken there just like me. We... we well we were chosen by the gods to fulfill a prophecy..." she stopped for moment to see his reaction and take a breath.

"Are you sure that you're-"

"Please James... just let me finish." she cut him off, not wanting this to be any harder than it already was.

He nodded and waited for her to continue.

"We were chosen to defeat the Greek God of Time, Cronus. We're the descendants of seven Greek heroes. We finally defeated him, five years ago. We went through... horrible things. We saw even worse things. The seven of us know... the darkest truths of the world..." she trailed off, looking back to the stars. As if they were her connection to the others. Her connection to herself.

It was silent for a few moments. The tension in the room growing by the second. Theresa heard a sigh and closed her eyes for a moment.

"Can you please say something." she said after a little while longer.

"I-I don't know what to say..." he said, still processing everything he was just told.

The silence covered the room again. Theresa kept her eyes closed waiting for... something. Anything.

"M-maybe we should take you back to the hospital. The doctors said you hit your head pretty hard." he said finally, standing up.

Her eyes shot open and she looked at him. He was serious.

"I'm not making this up James." she stated, also standing.

"The doctor said that you might be confused about some things. But don't worry, we'll make it through this." he said, putting a smile on his face.

"I'm not confused! For the first time in... years I'm thinking clearly." she retorted, completely outraged.

"Theresa..." he placed his hands on her shoulders, "The doctors said-"

"Screw the freaking doctors! They don't know everything James. They sure as hell don't know me... or what I've been through." she yelled, pulling away from his hands.

He looked shocked. Theresa had never used that kind of language before, let alone towards him. This wasn't Theresa. This wasn't his Theresa.

"Theresa..." he started, taking a second to sigh but he didn't finish.

"I'm not making this up James! I'm not." she said, tears threatening to spill down her cheeks. She knew that he wouldn't believe her. She knew he wouldn't understand.

"Listen to yourself. You sound...." he looked at her trying to find the right word to describe it.

"What? Crazy? Insane?" she asked, daring him to finish his sentence.

"It's just not possible. I mean Greek Gods.... fighting a God of Time that's thousands of years old..." he started to pace as he listed things off.

"I know it sounds farfetched but... I've lived it James. I have scars to prove it. I know that it's true. I thought you'd understand." her voice became almost a whisper at the end.

"What I understand is you need to get help." he said, once more resting his hands on her shoulders.

"No!" she pulled away again and he wore a shocked expression again.

"Theresa... what happened to you....?" he asked.

"Nothing. You wanted to know the real me. Well this is me. I've been running from my past for so long now. I just can't anymore. James... please, you have to believe me. Why would I lie to you?" she said, her voice straining to stay even, but faltered.

"Theresa... I don't know if I can." he replied, casting his glance away from her. Afraid to look at her.

The room once more fell silent as each tried to figure out what to do next. It was like playing chess. You had to make your move strategically... or lose it all. When Theresa couldn't take anymore silence she spoke up. He knew that much, there wasn't really any point in stopping there.

"James... I'm leaving." she said softly. His head shot up as he tried to see if she was serious.

"What do you mean leaving?" he asked, he wasn't really sure what to think about anything anymore.

"I-I'm psychic and I had a vision. That's why I was in the hospital- I hadn't had one in nearly five years. Having that ability rushing back all at once must've short-circuited my body or something...." she paused, mentally laughing at how much she sounded like Odie right then, "My vision was about an old... friend, Jay. Something bad is going to happen to him and I'm going to make sure it doesn't." she finished.

James opened his mouth to speak but Theresa silenced him.

"Please... just don't. I'm going and I won't be talked out of it. And don't try following me... I won't risk your life too." she said, her old self- her real self- slowly returning.

All James could do was nod as she walked past him to their bedroom. She pulled a suitcase out from under the bed and began to pack. A single tear slid down her cheek as she did so. She had just opened herself up to James. Told him her darkest secret... and he didn't believe her.

She didn't know what to think anymore. They had been so close. Things had been so perfect. Then this happened. Maybe it was for the best. Maybe it was fate's way of telling her this was wrong. Maybe....they just weren't meant to have happy endings...

She isn't the same person she used to be... not for now anyways. Third- cookie to everyone who has supported this story and been patient for this chapter. Fourth- I will try to update so much sooner. Midterms are over and I will have a little more extra time. Fifth- no more lists. ;P Don't forget to send me a review letting me know what you thought of the chapter. Cheers;D
