This never happened.
I think I dreamed it all up.
I was probably really tired.
Jamie and me used to sneak out of the village sometimes to go play at the edge of the desert. There was this big rock out there that was kinda like our tower, and we climbed on it, fell off of it, the works. And - maybe it was hot that day, but we had finished trying to kill each other and were all laid out on the grass starin’ at the sky and lookin’ at the clouds and tryin’ to catch our breath.
“That one looks like a pirate ship.”
“That one’s a snake.”
“Hey, Jamie, that one looks like your mom.”
“Shut up! It looks like yours.”
“You don’t even know what my mom looks like.”
“Well, you don’t either.”
“I guess not.”
It was awful quiet.
“My mom wants me to get a girlfriend, Locke.”
I looked over at him, like, was he fucking serious?
“Gross,” I said. “You might have to kiss her.”
“I know! What’s the big deal with kissing anyway? Girls are bad enough without having to touch them on the mouth.”
“You’re right! I’d never kiss a dumb girl.”
“Me either. Girls are the enemy.”
“The enemy,” I agreed. “Except Grandma. She’s okay.”
I kinda remember the sun was in my eyes until a cloud moved over it.
“Hey, Jamie?”
“Huh?”
“We could find out.”
“Find out what?”
“What the big deal is. About kissing. Girls are gross, but if you tried it with a boy...”
“Hmm.” He seemed like he was thinking about it. “Nah. I think it’s against the rules or something. Besides, kissing is kissing and it’s still girly. I don’t want to do any girly stuff.”
“Me either,” I agreed.
We fell asleep in a little while.
