Shouldn't her last name be Black, not Tonks?Author's response
Thank you oh so much for the comment. You don't know how helpful this was. I had only written half of the chapter before my hiatus and when I came back to finish it I hadn't noticed that I'd gone back to the canon name on accident. Can't have that now can I? lol. XD Fixed it right away. :)The Potters and Dumbledore's Secret

Apologies for the ridiculously short review. I realized I was late for work and didn't remember my one strong criticism.
My concern is the uncanny similarity to canon the troll events showed. There were a few more details, sure. Ron acquitted himself better, and Harry did better in terms of leadership but a bit worse in terms of actually taking action. Hermione took the blame when she didn't have to (how hard is it to happen to be using the bathroom when the troll attacks?)
That last one is as much of a complaint against canon as anything, so I apologize.
Still, I love this story, I just wish it wasn't taking after canon so strongly. I understand that you like all of the characters, but they can be nice enough without taking center stage (Dean, Seamus and even Neville make good examples).
Looking forward to more.Author's response
No problem, I find myself forgetting things all the time. lol. You bring up some good points, and the encounter gave me trouble for awhile thinking it up. It ran so close to the canon situations because this was the perfect event to bring Ron & Hermione together, and I really didn't see a time to do it later. As we get more of Harry's friends developed, R & H really due become scenery characters mostly and it made sense to me to get their friendship started a.s.a.p. I really want to get over the fact that they're only starting out at school and have barely learned any spells especially ones pertaining to battles, with that it really limited my choices in Harry effectively defeating the troll. I tried to rely on ingenuity and the luck of Harry having explosive prank paraphernalia on him. The next chapter is a good example I think in how R & H will be used, more background moments mostly. Thank you again for the comment and reading after all this time! :)The Potters and Dumbledore's Secret

I've never understood why Hermione felt obligated to lie.
Sure, saying "I was here crying" might be a bit embarrassing, but she hates getting in trouble more than death, or so she says, so...Author's response
Thank you for the comment. To me, it was the fact that Ron & Harry went out of their way just for her. She'd been pretty much ostracized by everyone of her peers at Hogwarts (except Harry who was polite). To let them get in trouble for helping her might have scared them away from being a friend. The logic being, if helping a friend gets me in trouble why would I be their friend? The Potters and Dumbledore's Secret

pre hogwarts was very original and nice as was harry in ravenclaw...the thing with hermione lying to mcgonagall was dumb in canon and is the same here...will such poor lie go undetected by a professor of her caliber? i don't know why ron is glorified this much considering he doesn't contribute much to the group other than as comic relief....my humble opinion is that if you could cut back on the canon influence this fic would be far more interesting to read since if it goes like canon every one reading it will know what happens next....give ron a brain otherwise justify his actions coz all he ever thinks is qudditch and food along with being an immature jerk...please update soon!Author's response
Thank you for the comment. Hermione lied because she was shocked that Ron & Harry went out of their way for her. To have them get in trouble might scare them off and she leaped at the chance to take any punishment that was to be given. With McGonagall, Hermione has been the perfect student in every way. She may have seen through the lie, but she also saw what it was for, friendship. And after everything that girl had been through, McGonagall showed her soft side. I didn't really glorify Ron, just showed the reason he was in Gryffindor, and don't worry if you have a problem with the character, that chapter was his shining moment for the story, he takes a backseat for much of the rest of the story. The Potters and Dumbledore's Secret

Ok I don't tend to like many 'James and Lilly survive' fics bit this on is pretty well done.
I do think that it doesn't make all that much sense for Harry to spend that much time with Ron and 'Mione compared to those in his family (Nim, Daphne), new friends (Hannah), and house mates (Padma and Penelope). He tolerates Ron because of Ginny at best and he barely even knows 'Mione... what's going on?Author's response
Thank you for the comment! In actuality this chapter is the only one where Harry, Ron & Hermione are isolate together. Harry is a good person, so he's the only one who even cares to remember that Hermione doesn't know about the troll. Ron is the closest friend around and happens to be the reason Hermione was clueless. Harry dragged him along to take responsibility for his action, never imagining that they'd actually cross paths with the troll, after all, the girls' bathroom is no where near the dungeons. They become more scenery characters after this defining moment and Harry's closer friends take on the rest of the way. I just needed this moment to cement the Ron/Hermione friendship, that dynamic is perfect for the small moments they'll appear in future chapters. I hope this answers your question. The Potters and Dumbledore's Secret

An interesting and more realistic version of the fight with the troll (or as realistic as something like that could be, anyway). I always found it odd that the troll was taken out so easily; blowing it up with a box of fireworks was a bit more believable method of victory.
That aside... Hmm? Is that a little R/Hr romance I see emerging. At least Ron in this story isn't the complete... moron that he is in canon.
Overall, a worthwhile read after a long absence. Go you!
